Erin Harkes is a singer-songwriter, born 1978 in Kearny, New Jersey, and raised in upstate New York. She started writing songs at 19 and has since released four albums of original material. Her first, Bar Napkins and Magic Markers was recorded at St. Andrew's College in North Carolina. The CD was a learning experience, as she recorded the album entirely by herself. Her second CD, Live at the Elbow Room, was recorded in New York City on September 21, 2001. The CD contains 4 songs, two of which were not on the first CD. The following year, she recorded her first studio project with her band, The Rebound entitled Rough, which featured nine original songs.
Harkes currently resides in Albany, New York. When not performing with the Rebound, she performs solo and has also performed with Folding Sky, another area band. In 2004, she teamed up with Folding Sky to perform at the Empire State Plaza in front of thousands of people. Out of three bands, they received 60% of the votes to win the Northeast Blues Society's "Colossal Contender" contest in 2004, earning a position in the international finals in Memphis, Tennessee in 2005.
Though blues has long been her forte, her original material spans a number of genres. She has opened for such artists as David Allen Coe, Fred Eaglesmith, Melissa Ferrick, and The Fleshtones.
Erin is first cousin to National Soccer Hall of Famer John Harkes.
In March 2005, Harkes was featured on the cover of Metroland, the alternative newsweekly of New York's capital region. Soon after, she released a live album called "Special I Am" featuring 11 songs. In 2007 Metroland's readers voted Erin Best Local Solo Musician.
