My name is E-Ping Rau (饒益品 in traditional character Mandarin), usually known as epingchris on the Internet, sometimes also under the pen name Shihchuan (石川 in traditional character Mandarin). I'm from Hualien, a town located at the east coast of Taiwan. I'm currently in my senior year of high school, and I'm entering National Taiwan University in September.
I was initially a fan of userbox: I wanted to add all of them that fit me. But later on I discovered that doing so would create a cumbersome user page, so I decided to use it sparingly and instead put some personal information in the form of prose.
I'm not always a diligent wikipedian, and I seldom make major contribution, nevertheless, I will try my best to continue help Wikipedia getting better. Leave any comments, suggestions and criticisms that you wish to let me know on my talk page!

[edit] Editing Habits
I'm constantly picking out minor spelling/grammar/punctuation/capitalization errors. That's just one of my habits while reading any written text: I seem to be somehow very sensitive to those mistakes, but I'm definitely not critical of them: it's something everyone, including me, does at times. I make those corrections solely to ensure the quality and readability of Wikipedia articles, and it is my opinion that completely ignoring writing conventions shows lack of respect and laziness.
I am not yet completely familiar with the methods of citing sources, but I'm learning, so please forgive me for any mistakes I make along the way and don't hesitate to put up all those little "citation needed" tag if my edits seem dubious. I myself will also help maintaining the quality of the articles by adding various tags.
At present, I refrain from dealing with any types of media, as I'm not familiar with the Wikipedia image policies, ways to upload them and insert them into pages, and wikicommons. Nor am I eager to plunge into the debates on copyvio, fair use and other issues.
I encourage and advise everyone to sign their posts, as it is a good etiquette that prvents people from simply dropping into any discussion, throwing out a couple of irresponsible remarks, and then leaving with no concern for others' feelings.
[edit] Attitudes
I prefer IPA and metric system (or SI) to other ways of transcription systems and measuring quantities, respectively.
I fully support the teaching of evolution, but I'm also eager to acquire different POV on this subject.
I have a dislike for cynicism, pseudoscience, and conspiracy theories.
[edit] Particular Fields of Interest
[edit] Science
My main interest in science is in the field of biology. I developed this major interest in high school, extensively studied it, and participated in International Biology Olympiad in year 2007. I'm taking biology major in university. I am especially interested in the fields of developmental biology, neuroscience, and ecology. I have made some edits in the past on different fields of biology such as cytology, anatomy, physiology, genetics, biochemistry, botany, zoology, etc. I am also interested in evolution and the controversy that surrounds it.
I hold certain interests in other fields of science as well, such as astronomy, chemistry, physics, geology and cognitive science.
[edit] Language and Linguistics

I have a fonding of different fields of linguistics. Recently I have been primarily editing articles about phonology, but syntax, writing systems, etymology, semantics, applied linguistics, and sociolinguistics are also of my interest.
I also enjoy learning foreign languages. In addition to the languages that I've already learned, I would next like to learn German, Italian, Norwegian, Finnish, Turkish, Hungarian, Greek, etc. Different languages and the culture associated with them fascinate me.
I am also deeply interested in constructed languages.
[edit] Prescriptivism?
Like I've said before, I'm not immediately critical of "mistakes" one make in a language. It's something everyone, including me, does at times, and I'm also of the belief that language is constantly under change, and that prescriptivists have no place in the field of linguistics. Under the same logic, you can expect me to tolerate singular they, split infinitives, passive voice, dangling preposition, conjunctions that start a sentence, who in non-nominative cases, and use of ellipses. If any, these has to do with style rather than correctness. Nevertheless, I distinguish between than and then, its and it's.
I do not think it is unimportant to be careful about grammar, punctuation and such: we should pay attention to our own usage according to concensus usage and mutual intelligibility/respect.
[edit] Hobbies
[edit] Music
I am an music aficionade - more precisely, a music junkie. I like a variety of music genre, including Rock and roll, folk music, electronic music, R&B, hip hop, new age music, etc. I especially like various rock bands in Japan, USA or Europe, and French pop musicians. I have learned piano and recorder before, but unfortunately now I remember little if any of it. I'm learning to play guitar right now: I'm very interested in it and would like to continue. I also enjoy singing and dancing, in hard-to-pigeonhole styles.
[edit] Reading and Writing
I like reading almost all sorts of things, including fiction and non-fiction, online articles and sometimes even manuals. I enjoy contemporary literature, French literature and ancient Chinese literature very much: I like especially poetry and fictions. My favorite writers include Jostein Gaarder, Haruki Murakami, Patrick Süskind, Milan Kundera, Dan Brown, Walt Whitman, Rabindranath Tagore,Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, 余光中, 鄭愁予 and 席慕蓉 (no English Wikipedia pages exist for them yet).
I also have tried to write poetry, proses and novels of my own, which can be found on my website down at the bottom. Most are in my native language but a small portion of them is in other languages. Be expected to find some mediocre writings there. :)
[edit] Traveling
I have lived in the United States for one year, residing in Bloomington, Indiana, but I have traveled to some major cities such as Chicago, Atlanta, New York City, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, and also states such as Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, and Arizona.
During 2007, after the participationg of the International Biology Olympiad in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, I went to various national parks in Alberta near Calgary, and Victoria, British Columbia.
Other than United States and Canada, I have traveled to Bali, Singapore, and Japan.
I love to travel and encounter different people, experience different way of living and culture. I have yet to make any significant edits on subjects of world geography, tourism information, etc. However, it is possible to see me editing pages related to Taiwan, because as a Taiwan native, I have a lot of hands-on experience on this topic and access to the many information needed. Of course, I will try to obey the NPOV rules as much as possible when editing some sensitive subjects.
[edit] Others
My favorite sports include table tennis, volleyball, badminton, cycling and swimming. I am interested in baseball, triathlon, basketball and cue games.
I enjoy card games such as Big Two, Bridge, and Uno. I also enjoy photography.
