[edit] Weekend Ross Report

Heading to California, where I was born January 3, 1952 in Ft. Bragg, for Sunday’s One Night Stand in San Diego and then a nice little 200+ mile drive up to Bakersfield for Monday Night Raw. The King and I are Road Warriors, not of the Hawk and Animal variety, but enjoy traveling together and often times drive for miles without talking about wrestling but when we do we generally "re-book the territory". :)

It will be interesting to see what bout closes the show on Sunday Night but my vote would be for it to be the TLC Match for the World’s Title between Edge and, if he doesn’t win it he leaves, The Undertaker. These extreme rules PPVs are challenging to broadcast because if everyone doesn’t pay attention there is the opportunity to duplication in some bouts which is always something one attempts to avoid.

I am anxious to see what changes are initiated on Monday Night Raw this week as it seems that several changes are rumored to be on their way. Last Monday’s lackluster TV rating for Monday Night Raw would certainly be reason enough to move these changes along as no one could ever be content with a 2.9 national cable rating. Personally, I am for longer match times and to see if some of the younger, talented individuals who have been developing, some for quite some time, can add to the mix and provide a "fresh feel" to the presentation. The announcers are talking less, which I have zero issues with quite honestly as it is television and not radio, but one could also make a case that the televised, talking segments could be more succinct as well. One man’s opinion.

It’s time to "reshuffle" the deck as the old wrestling expression goes and attempt to create new stars involved in new issues which might give cause for "business picking up".

As we reported here several weeks ago, it looks as if Bobby Lashley has pulled the trigger on the start of what might become a successful MMA career by apparently signing with the American Fight League. Hopefully Lashley did not sign an exclusive, can develop a body of work by the most obvious way available, win just win, and then be romanced by the big boys IE the UFC. Unless I have missed something observing Lashley while he was in the WWE, Bobby has all the skills it would seem to potentially become a factor in the MMA world but I also do not know what sort of "striker" he will be which seems to be an obvious key component in MMA. Lashley is a great natural athlete nonetheless and I wish him well.

Brock Lesnar finds himself in a challenging predicament on August 9 in his home town of Minneapolis in UFC 87 against tough Heath Herring who is a talented athlete. Is Lesnar in a "must win" situation already in only his second UFC fight in prime time (PPV)? Many insiders say yes and when the chips are down and Lesnar is somewhat "cornered" he can be an animal which is a necessary ingredient for success in MMA. Having the "home field" advantage can be a blessing or a curse as every family member, friend, cousin, etc wants tickets and can cause a huge distraction. Trust me on this one as I have had more requests for free tickets to the June 30 RAW in OKC than I could ever fulfil. I’ve always wondered why people who claim to be your pals wouldn’t want to simply buy a ticket to your event to support the cause. I don’t get free tickets to OU Football and would be embarrassed to ask.

The Ted DiBiase book that we reviewed here a few days ago is out on June 10. If you missed our review, you can still read it in the archived section of the site. I suggest you check out this 241 page, easy but informative read which focuses on Ted’s wrestling career and not that much on his Christianity. What do you think the next step for young Ted Dibiase will be who, BTW, looks like a young Bob Orton to me?

Seems like a natural move for the NWA to add Ric Flair to the list of those being inducted into the NWA Hall of Fame. Flair will be inducted by Jim Cornette which will no doubt be entertaining and informative as it relates to JC’s personal interactions with "Naitch". This event in Atlanta is next Saturday and from what I understand "plenty" of seats are still available.

Congrats to Chris Bell for his diligence in getting his film, "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" produced and in some theatres. I predict this film will do really well on DVD and it has one definite customer in yours truly. I despise the fact that athletes abuse their bodies by still using steroids and HGH and pray for the day that a conclusive drug test for HGH is developed, preferably thru urinalysis. Every sports and entertainment entity will always have its cheaters but closing all the perceived "loopholes" and getting as "healthy" a roster, no matter the team or company" should be the major goal for all that can affect this matter. One of the things that attracts me to MMA is the utilization of smaller albeit highly skilled athletes. The days of sports entertainers having to be "bigger than life" are history in my view. "Bigger than life" personalities and "bigger than life" skill sets however are still necessary ingredients for success.

I am told that our new look website will be up and "live" by Tuesday. That’s my story and we are sticking to it. Enjoy the weekend and I will be anxious to blog again when I return Tuesday from this road trip. I hope I have some exciting things on which to comment.

LITO SHEPPARD A NO-SHOW Posted by Michael David Smith on June 3, 2008, 2:05 p.m.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ voluntary organized team activities began today, and cornerback Lito Sheppard did not attend.

Sheppard is widely believed to be unhappy with both his contract and his role on the defense, where the addition of Asante Samuel is likely to force him out of the starting lineup. There was even some talk that if Sheppard did report for OTAs, he would work with the wide receivers, not the defensive backs. Last season Sheppard started 11 games at cornerback and missed five others with injuries.

Sheppard did report to a mandatory minicamp last month. He could have been fined for missing that; he can’t be fined for missing OTAs.

Backup tackle Scott Young also skipped today’s activities. No explanation has been given for Young’s absence. Permalink | Comments Back to Top EX-BENGAL CONVICTED OF WRITING A BAD CHECK Posted by Michael David Smith on June 3, 2008, 1:43 p.m.

Former Cincinnati Bengals fullback Pete Johnson was found guilty today of writing a bad check to buy a pickup truck.

A jury in Urbana, Ohio, acquitted the 53-year-old Johnson of grand theft of a motor vehicle. He will be sentenced on July 21 and faces up to one year in prison and a fine of $2,500.

At 252 pounds, Johnson was the biggest back of his generation. In his best season, 1981, he was chosen to the Pro Bowl after carrying 274 times for 1,071 yards and 12 touchdowns. He played from 1977 to 1983 with the Bengals and then played for both the Chargers and Dolphins in 1984 before retiring.

Johnson is a member of the athletics hall of fame at Ohio State, where he shared a backfield with two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin. Permalink | Comments Back to Top LYNCH AT OTAS, NO COMMENT ON HIT AND RUN Posted by Michael David Smith on June 3, 2008, 1:00 p.m.

Buffalo running back Marshawn Lynch is working out with his teammates today during the Bills’ organized team activities, but he’s not talking about the reports that police want to question him about a hit-and-run accident.

Lynch’s lawyer, Michael Caffery, released a statement that reads, in full, “As you are aware, I represent Marshawn T. Lynch. The Buffalo Police Department is still investigating this matter. At the present time, I decline to make any comment on behalf of my client. I have also instructed my client not to make any comment.”

According to multiple media reports, a vehicle owned by Lynch was involved in a hit-and-run accident in downtown Buffalo last weekend. The woman who was hit was treated and released at a nearby hospital. Permalink | 1 Comment Back to Top OCHO CINCO SAYS HE’LL BE BACK Posted by Michael David Smith on June 3, 2008, 12:21 p.m.

Chad Johnson says he’ll report for duty with the Cincinnati Bengals this season, and he will likely show up to minicamp this month.

Johnson is serving as guest editor of ESPN The Magazine (seriously), and in the issue scheduled to hit newsstands tomorrow, he says he’s ready to play for the Bengals.

We had previously heard that Johnson intends to show up to the Bengals’ mandatory minicamp next weekend, and Mark Curnutte of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Johnson essentially confirms that in his ESPN The Magazine column.

“Am I coming back? Of course I am. I told my coaches I’m going to California to act, but the truth is I may come back to the Bengals as early as June,” Johnson writes. “I may be crazy but I’m not stupid.”

Johnson would be docked about $25,000 if he skipped the three-day minicamp, and more than $14,000 a day if he skipped training camp, which opens July 28. He’s not going to walk away from that money.

Still, Johnson makes clear in the ESPN The Magazine piece that he wouldn’t mind leaving. “If I can get out of Cincinnati, the sky’s the limit,” Johnson writes. “What could I do in a place like Philadelphia or Dallas? It would be ridiculous. It’s gonna be like a whole new me, like Ocho Cinco 2.0. Yeah, I like that. Ocho Cinco 2.0.” Permalink | 12 Comments Back to Top TEXANS GM RICK SMITH GETS CONTRACT EXTENSION Posted by Josh Alper on June 3, 2008, 11:47 a.m.

Riding the wave of a franchise-record eight wins, the Houston Texans have given general manager Rick Smith a four-year contract extension.

This was to be the final year of Smith’s original three-year deal but he’s now got until 2012 to work his magic. Smith made strong moves via trade, free agency and draft before the 2007 season which likely helped him get the additional years. Matt Schaub, Andre Davis, Amobi Okoye and Fred Bennett all were major contributors last season.

This offseason hasn’t been quite as splashy but if he hit with draftees Duane Brown, Antwaun Molden and Steve Slaton, he’ll have improved the three most troubling spots on the team.

Smith’s extension bodes well for Gary Kubiak’s hopes of getting one, although that may not happen before the 2008 season is finished. Kubiak is currently signed through 2010 but another season of improvement would likely keep the ex-Bronco tandem in charge of the Texans for a while longer. Permalink | Comments Back to Top KURT WARNER SEEKS CONTRACT EXTENSION Posted by Michael David Smith on June 3, 2008, 10:58 a.m.

Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner has been declared the backup in Arizona, but he’s hoping to negotiate a contract extension worthy of a guy who at least has a chance of being a starter.

“I want to be in a situation where I’m comfortable. I kind of want to know my future,” Warner said. “A lot of it will be dictated by what kind of plans they have for me here. I think the contract is going to allow me to see what they’re thinking for me moving forward.”

Cardinals General Manager Rod Graves said he hopes to have an extension done by the start of training camp.

Warner is entering the final year of his deal, and ordinarily, backups don’t have much leverage in contract negotiations. But when the backup is coming off a season in which he out-played the starter, that changes things.

If the Cardinals give Warner a new deal with a hefty salary, that won’t only be a sign that they have confidence in Warner. It will also be a sign that they lack confidence in Matt Leinart. Permalink | 2 Comments Back to Top JERAMETRIUS BUTLER SIGNS WITH SAINTS Posted by Josh Alper on June 3, 2008, 10:05 a.m.

According to John Clayton, the New Orleans Saints have signed veteran corner Jerametrius Butler after a weekend tryout.

The news hasn’t made its way to the New Orleans papers nor to the team’s website yet but the signing was likely to create depth while Mike McKenzie makes his way back from knee surgery. It was a deep group already, especially after adding Randall Gay and Tracy Porter over the offseason, but not a particularly good one last season so the more the merrier.

Butler signed with the Bills while last season was already underway and played in seven games, starting just once. He was a starter with the Rams in 2003 and 2004 but a knee injury cost him 2005 and helped launch the journeyman phase of his career. Permalink | 1 Comment Back to Top TUESDAY MORNING ONE-LINERS Posted by Michael David Smith on June 3, 2008, 9:46 a.m.

Former NFL player Chuck Klingbeil is facing a felony larceny charge.

The Raiders’ training camp practices take place at a Napa Valley middle school.

Dolphins DT Kory Robertson has announced his retirement — at age 23.

The Montreal Alouettes opened training camp Sunday without Charles Rogers but with Peter Warrick.

Says Cowboys coach Wade Phillips of LB Anthony Spencer, “He’s a really good athlete. He has some things to work on, and he’s working hard on those things — [like] getting rid of the tight end early.”

Lawrence Taylor thinks his old coach, Bill Parcells, will work things out with Jason Taylor.

The Dolphins are trying to get their draft picks signed quickly, but the agent for third-round DE Kendall Langford says, “Although we’ve been talking, we’re not close.”

Says Giants GM Jerry Reese of DE Michael Strahan, “We’re still not sure what Michael is going to do as far as retirement goes.”

There’s suspense in Philadelphia about whether CB Lito Sheppard will show up for voluntary workouts.

The Ravens are helping to renovate the football field at a local high school.

Says Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache of newly acquired DE Erasmus James, “Where coaches go awry is when they try to take a guy and push him and make him play before he’s ready. We’re going to let him play when he’s ready.”

Former Bears QB Bob Avellini has been charged four times in recent years with DUI; he was acquitted twice, convicted once and has a fourth pending.

The Bears will be mingling with the fans this weekend.

Says Browns quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer, “Last year was like trying to dig a foundation to build a house with us putting in the offense. Now we’ve got a foundation dug deep, and you’re able to build a taller house this year.”

Lions RB Brian Calhoun might finally contribute to the offense this year.

Gus Johnson is expected to call play-by-play on Lions preseason games this season, which will be a good test of whether it’s humanly possible to sound excited while calling a Lions preseason game.

Is stopping the quick slant the weakness of the Steelers’ defense?

Falcons rookie OT Sam Baker has Jackie Slater to thank for making him an offensive lineman.

Titans RB LenDale White has a July 29 trial date on five municipal code violations; the worst-case scenario is that he’ll be fined.

Says Panthers DE Tyler Brayton of his role on the defense, “It’s great. That’s all you want in this league, for someone to define your role and you just go out and do the best you can.”

Saints RB Deuce McAllister is described as “in as good of shape right now as one could be, considering he had procedures on both knees.”

Says Broncos G Montrae Holland of bench-pressing 460 pounds, “It’s the most I’ve done. I feel a lot stronger than I did last year. Last year, I didn’t push it past 405. I’m the strongest I’ve ever been. Now I need to do a little cardio to trim down.”

Did the Buccaneers surrender some of their dignity by signing TE Jerramy Stevens?

Says Bucs FB B.J. Askew of playing on an injured ankle last year, “It was tough. Every game, I didn’t know if I could make it or not. I pushed myself out there. I knew if I could get in a uniform, I could make it through.”

Raiders RB LaMont Jordan plans to attend the upcoming mandatory minicamp, even though he’s not sure how long he’ll be with the team.

Everyone will be watching the demeanor of Raiders coach Lane Kiffin after the team’s off-season soap opera.

It’s still not completely clear whether Larry Allen is retired.

The people who know 49ers QB J.T. O’Sullivan have nothing but good things to say about him.

Says Seahawks DT Larry Tripplett of talking to his wife about whether to sign with Seattle, “She was like, ‘You know we’ve got to go there.’ Hey, keep momma happy and the whole house is happy.” Permalink | 2 Comments Back to Top ARNAZ BATTLE SKIPS NINERS WORKOUT Posted by Josh Alper on June 3, 2008, 9:43 a.m.

Arnaz Battle, San Francisco’s leading wide receiver in 2007, is skipping this week’s workouts and staying at home in Dallas.

Battle had participated in previous Niner OTAs and was expected to be at this one as well. “I’m not sure what his issue is,” coach Mike Nolan told the San Jose Mercury News and Battle’s agent declined to comment.

A logical guess would be the altered role Battle figures to play in the offense this season. His contract runs through 2009 and, awful quarterbacking or no, hasn’t outperformed it in a meaningful way. Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce were signed over the offseason. Johnson is expected to start at one receiver and Battle was battling Bruce for the other spot during previous practices.

It’s a logical guess from our standpoint but not so much for Battle. It’s hard to beat out the competition from Dallas, especially when the competition is familiar with the Mike Martz playbook. Adding to the shortsightedness is the fact that the Niners figure to feature a lot of three receiver sets with Battle still seeing plenty of throws in his direction. Permalink | 5 Comments Back to Top ELLIS, PHILLIPS CLEAR THE AIR Posted by Michael David Smith on June 3, 2008, 9:10 a.m.

Cowboys outside linebacker Greg Ellis has been unhappy with a lot of things in Dallas, ranging from his contract to his role in the defense.

But Ellis and Cowboys coach Wade Phillips had a heart-to-heart chat on Monday, and afterward, his agent indicated that Ellis was satisfied.

“Everyone is on the same page,” agent James Williams told the Dallas Morning News.

Ellis has skipped voluntary practices this off-season and said he’s concerned that the coaching staff is planning to replace him in the starting lineup with 2007 first-round draft pick Anthony Spencer. But Williams said the Cowboys told Ellis that he remains the starter.

Assuming he’s still a Cowboy, Ellis will make a base salary of $3.325 million this year and $4.15 million next year. Permalink | 5 Comments Back to Top HENRY, SHANAHAN ALTERCATION PRECEDED RELEASE? Posted by Mike Florio on June 3, 2008, 7:09 a.m.

Rumors are swirling that the seemingly abrupt decision of the Broncos to cut running back Travis Henry was ultimately prompted by an altercation of some kind involving Henry and coach Mike Shanahan.

Though we’re not hearing that Henry pulled a Latrell Sprewell on the Broncos’ head coach, or that the incident in any way turned physical, several sources have told us that there was some type of unpleasant exchange between the two at some point within the past few weeks.

Presumably, the Broncos waited to cut Henry until after they got Michael Pittman under contract. If Henry had been cut before Pittman was signed, Pittman’s leverage would have increased.

And so the end result is that Shanahan has wasted another $6.7 million of owner Pat Bowlen’s money. Despite the apparent fact that the decision didn’t arise from Henry’s football skills, the reality that the Broncos were forced to part ways with Henry due to his attitude and/or off-field conduct further proves that Shanahan simply isn’t a good judge of character when it comes to football players.

But he’s definitely a good coach, because as a coach he continues to generally achieve at a relatively high level despite having one hand tied behind his back via his generally poor decisions in free agency and the draft.

MAN STOPPER.
MAN STOPPER.

I’ve been looking into my future pet ownership and hopefully by Summer, I will be situated somewhere and will be able to get him (him).

But after some deliberation, for like, 3 minutes, I’ve reconsidered his potential breed and naming.

He will still be Master Fuji to JT and you – if you don’t play your cards right, but I can’t call him Mister Fuji. He should be calling me Mister. I’m his boss hogg. I pay the bills. I make the rules. I want some pigs feet. So, I’ve decided to give him a first name. It’s gonna be 411 (four eleven) and I want to get a frog eating bastard French Bulldog.

Being of Japanese decent (by way of Jersey), I probably couldn’t pronounce his name anyhow so it will just be 411. But when the drama is poppin and I’m looking for blood, I would assume he’ll turn his back of Katzenjammer - which will now be the cats name – because he is a French coward.

Fish (alias: Leiderkrantz) was a well known Nazi sympathizer, so it makes sense that second Fish/Cat #2 follow in the Filth’s footsteps. 411 would serve as my personal informant on the inside.

Also excellent would be when I make a YouTube ‘Best-of of 411’, I could title it ‘What’s the 4-1-1? (Remix)’.

Dude - I had a a vision last night through into this morning. You know I like French bulldogs and what they bring to the table in terms of boxing it out. But, when shit really goes down, I think that frog eating bastard would front right quick. So that's why I decided again I will get a CHIWAWA... the most feared of the toy-sized dogs.

And, his name will be Katzenjammer the Terrible (or the Barbarian, depending on how I groom my personal soldier).

Here are some bullet points I pilfered off the chiwawa article on why he will eat your face off the bone...

  1. Chihuahuas are prized for their devotion, ferocity and personality. Their curious nature and small size make them easily adaptable to a variety of environments, including the city and small apartments.
  2. Chihuahuas are often stereotyped as high-strung, though it has been shown that correct training and socialization can result in an outstanding companion animal. (I've slayed a cat's mind into acting like a dog. This would be no sweat.)
  3. Chihuahuas are not well-suited as small children's pets because of their size, temperament and tendency to bite when frightened. It is recommended that children be school aged or older before adding a Chihuahua to one's home.
  4. Also, many Chihuahuas focus their devotion on one person, becoming overly jealous of that person's human relationships. (Read: He will show fierce allegiance to only me... unlike the Cat.) This can be mitigated through socialization.
  5. Chihuahuas also tend to have a "clannish" nature. (Read: You know I like the Wu.)
  6. Chihuahuas seem to have no concept of their own size and may fearlessly confront larger animals.
