Empire of Great Fulo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Empire of Great Fulo, also known as the Denanke Kingdom or Denianke Kingdom (1514-1776) was a pre-Islamic Fula kingdom of Senegal, which dominated the Futa Tooro region. Its Fula population dominated its neighbors through use of cavalry and fought wars against the Mali and Songhai empires.
The first ruler (Manga) of the Denianke Dynasty made his capital at the ancient city of Tekrur. The kingdom fought several battles against the Mandinka to its east and the Wolof peoples to its south.
The Denanke dynasty was overthrown by the kingdom of Fouta Toro under leader Abd-el-Kadr Toorodi in 1776 ushering in a near continuous era of Muslim Fula rule over the region.
