Elko County Courthouse is a historic building that, along with all other buildings in Elko County, Nevada was just shaken by an earthquake rated 6.0 on the Richter scale, on 21 Feb 2008.
The site was "a scene of terror" also on the night of 18 Jul 1870, when a giant burning chandelier fell into a throng of people.[2] That was in the original courthouse building, built in 1869.[3]
The current building is a replacement built in 1910.[3]
It is located at 571 Idaho Street in Elko, Nevada,[1] whose motto is "The Best Small Town in America".
A historic district in Wells, Nevada, which is 50 miles away to the northeast, suffered severe damage in the earthquake yesterday.[4] The earthquake epicenter was an additional 10 miles further to the east. Buildings were damaged in many Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming towns.
