Eftal is an Arabic word that is recorded to mean 'better than the best', or simply, 'better'. There have been several historic figures in various middle-eastern kingdoms named Eftal.
Eftal is currently - albeit rarely - used in naming girls and boys in Turkey, a country where both arabic names and names that come from the turkic language roots are used. Eftal sogukoglu and Eftal Gulbudak are examples.
There are some rumors that the name comes from a mermaid legend. This is clearly wrong, as there are historical figures that existed before even mermaids were thought of.
Eftal is also the name of a kingdom in NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind
