[edit] Note about Frutig’s age
There are conflicting reports as to Frutig’s year of birth. Database Football and Pro Football Reference indicate he was born in 1920. Total Football II lists his year of birth as 1918. The latter appears to be correct, as Frutig played for Michigan as a sophomore in the fall of 1938. If born in 1920, he would have been 16 years old when he graduated from high school in 1937 and 18 years old when playing for Michigan's varsity team as a sophomore in 1938. Also, a November 2007 published interview with Frutig's daughter indicated that he was 89 years old -- which means he would have been born in 1918, not 1920. [edit] Note about Frutig's blocked punt record
There is uncertainty as to Frutig's blocked punt total in 1940. There were articles published at the end of the 1940 season saing: “Frutig turned in a fine record defensively particularly in respect to his blocking punts. In the eight games Michigan played this fall, Ed personally blocked five punts. At least three of the punts he blocked were immediately followed by a touchdown for Michigan.”[1][2]
