The East of Scotland Shield is a Scottish football trophy awarded by the East of Scotland Football Association, which is now contested by Edinburgh rivals Hearts and Hibs. The only older cup competition in Scottish football is the Scottish Cup itself[1].
The competition was known as the Edinburgh Football Association Cup (from 1875-76 to 1882-83) and then the Edinburgh Shield (from 1883-84 to 1888-89) before becoming The East of Scotland Shield in 1889-90[2]. The competition played a significant part in establishing Hibs and Hearts as the predominant football clubs in Edinburgh, as the 1878 EFA Cup went to four replays and built interest in the two newly formed clubs[3].
The competition was competed for under a knockout format by football clubs based in Edinburgh and the surrounding area. These clubs included Alloa Athletic, Armadale, Bathgate, Berwick Rangers, Bo'ness, Bonnyrigg Rose, Cowdenbeath, Edinburgh University, Hearts, Hibs, Leith Athletic, Lochgelly United, Meadowbank Thistle and St Bernard's.
Hearts and Hibs, traditionally the strongest clubs in the area, contested most of the finals. Declining attendances meant that the competition was not contested from 1989-90.
The competition has been revived as an annual one-off match between the reserve teams of Hearts and Hibs. The match acts as a fundraiser for the East of Scotland Football Association.
