The E5 Series Shinkansen are 10-car high-speed trainsets currently on order by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) for use on Hayate services from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori commencing in 2011. Technology incorporated in these trains will be derived from the experimental Fastech 360S train tested by JR East.
Maximum speed will be 320 km/h, although services will initially run at a maximum speed of 300 km/h until 2013.
Car 10 (at the Aomori end) will be designated a "Super Green Car" (provisional name), featuring 18 power-reclining "shell" seats in 2+1 abreast configuration. Seat pitch will be 1,300 mm compared to 1,160 mm for conventional Green Car seating.
