Durnik

Durnik is a fictional character created by fantasy author David Eddings. He is one of the main characters in both The Belgariad and The Malloreon, and also appears in the prequels Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress.

Durnik (also known as "The Man With Two Lives" by the Mrin Codex and the Seers of Kell) is first introduced as a blacksmith working on Faldor's Farm in Pawn of Prophecy. After it is revealed that strange things are afoot, he travels with Garion, Pol and Belgarath into the world and his destiny. His mastery of a wide variety of craftsman's skills and his sensible advice prove valuable to the group during their quest to retrieve the Orb of Aldur.

He remains a constant in Belgarion's life through the events of The Belgariad, until his death at the hands of Zedar in Enchanter's End Game. Belgarion, with the help of the Orb of Aldur and the seven gods, resurrects him. After his close brush with death, he finds that he has been given the gift of sorcery and goes on to marry Polgara.

During the events of The Malloreon, Durnik becomes a disciple of Aldur after defeating the Demon Lord Nahaz and sending him (along with Torak's Disciple, Urvon) back to Hell. Durnik used his sledgehammer to do this, and after the battle with Nahaz, this sledgehammer is transformed into a silver amulet. This amulet is the mark of Durnik's discipleship, as all of Aldur's disciples possess similar amulets.

At the end of Seeress of Kell, Durnik becomes a father when his wife Polgara gives birth to twins.
