In role-playing games, a druid is a character class that is generally portrayed as using nature-based magical abilities who strive to protect nature from civilized intrusion. Most druids have abilities that involve healing, damaging spells, and shapeshifting.

[edit] Dungeons and Dragons

Druids in Dungeons & Dragons are spellcasters of neutral alignment, who gain divine magic from being at one with nature. Unlike clerics, druids do not have special powers against undead and cannot use metal armour. Druids have the unique ability to change into various animal forms.

[edit] EverQuest II

In EverQuest II, Druids are a priest class divided into Wardens and Furies. They are neutral and can come from Freeport, Qeynos, or Kelethin. They specialize in healing spells, particularly their heal over time (HoT) spells. They do the most damage of the priest classes but are restricted to cloth and leather armor.[1]

[edit] World of Warcraft

In World of Warcraft, only Night Elves and Tauren can become druids. They are spell casters and melee classes, having both offensive and healing magic. As they progress in level or through quest chains, they are able to shape-shift into different forms: Bear, Cat, Aquatic (only attainable through a quest chain), Moonkin, Tree of Life, Cheetah and Crow form. Each of these forms have unique roles to play. Bear form is used for either tanking or dps. Cat form is used for DPS, and is very closely related to the Rogue class. Aquatic is used for water travel. Moonkin is used for ranged spell damage. When the Druid shapeshifts into the Tree of Life, he gains an increase in the amount of damage he can heal, although he receives a decrease in his movement speed. This form is often used in group quest or dungeons. Travel form transforms the druid into a Cheetah and the druid gains a speed increase while in this form. Since the Druid has many different forms for different purposes, they are one of the most sought classes while looking for a group. Flight form can only be used in Outland, and is the druid's primary form of travel in this area.
