Dorrance Publishing Company is the oldest American independent vanity press, which identifies itself as a "subsidy publishing company". It was founded in 1920 by Philadelphia, Pennsylvania publisher Gordon Dorrance to provide an opportunity for new authors to establish themselves in print. Dorrance Publishing is currently located in Pittsburgh.
Several notable authors have gotten their start with Dorrance, including A.R. Ammons who won the 1972 National Book Award. Dorrance is also notable for publishing the works of many African-American authors who would otherwise have to seek publication in an industry that has few minority-owned publishers. Dorrance's list of African-American and civil rights titles is one of the largest of its kind.
