Corporal Donald B. Hoobler (June 1923 Manchester, Ohio - 3 January 1945 Belgium) fought in World War II as part of Company E ("Easy Company") of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, U.S. 101st Airborne Division.
He served in the Ohio National Guard until 1941, when he was sent home from Camp Shelby during training, after his father passed away. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a member of Easy Company.
He took part in D-Day, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge, where he was killed. He died of a non-combat related injury.
Much debate has raged about the circumstances surrounding his death. In the HBO mini-series, "Band of Brothers", Cpl. Hoobler is depicted obtaining a German Luger P08 pistol. He is heard saying that the gun involuntarily goes off in his pocket, severing a critical artery in his leg.
In actuality, as stated in the Stephen Ambrose book, "Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest", Cpl. Hoobler was killed when his own weapon snagged on a piece of barb wire, causing it to fire. The bullet entered his thigh, severing a major artery, and he died of blood loss.
The debate stems from interviews with veterans of Easy company, some of whom remembered only that Cpl. Hoobler had shot himself in the leg and that he had, just prior to his death, acquired the Luger pistol.
David Kenyon Webster states, in his book "Parachute Infantry: An American Paratrooper's Memoir of D-Day and the Fall of the Third Reich", that he thought Hoobler enjoyed war.
Cpl. Donald Hoobler is played by actor Peter McCabe in the HBO mini-series, "Band of Brothers".
