Doc Hammer

Born Eric Arthur Hammer
New London, Connecticut

Doc Hammer (born Eric Arthur Hammer on February 2nd in New London, Connecticut, U.S.) is a multi-disciplinary artist, most notable as co-writer (with Christopher McCulloch), editor, and voice actor (Doctor Girlfriend, Henchman #21, Master Billy Quizboy, and King Gorilla) for the animated television series The Venture Bros.. He is also a musician; he is currently the guitarist for Madison Strays and was part of the bands Mors Syphilitica and Requiem in White with then-wife Lisa Hammer, whom he has since divorced, but still works with on The Venture Bros., where she voices Triana Orpheus. He is credited for his earlier work as E.A. Hammer.

He attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston to study pottery,[1] but dropped out.[2] His roommate was Ben Edlund of The Tick,[3] through whom he met Christopher McCulloch. Hammer and Edlund have since collaborated on various scripts (including Crawley), and Hammer also has contributed to McCulloch's comics anthology Monkeysuit. Together, the three have collaborated on episodes of The Venture Bros.

He is also an oil painter whose work is exhibited at the Arcadia gallery of fine arts in SoHo.[4] Most of his portraits are of women in bras, and are titled "Saint" with successive numbers. He is completely self-taught, and cites Rembrandt and Whistler as two of his inspirations. One portrait, of Liz Vassey who played Captain Liberty from the live-action incarnation of The Tick, can be seen in the background of the Venture Bros. episode: "Return To Spider Skull Island."

  • He has appeared in films such as Lisa Hammer's Not Farewell, Sweet Flesh and Pus$bucket (alongside Terrence Fleming), Ben Edlund's Crawley, and his own film Rub.[7]
  • He composed the soundtrack for the Cannes-featured film A, B, C... Manhattan.[8]
  • His numerous tattoos include the designs for Mors Syphilitica's album covers, various flowers, and James McNeill Whistler's "butterfly signature."
  • He was featured on The Sartorialist.
  • He has vitiligo of the scalp, which causes his hair to be two different colors.[9][citation needed]
  • Has an inner-ear disorder, and is incapable of using air travel because of it.[10][citation needed]
