Disney GOALS

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Growth Opportunities through Athletics, Learning & Service

Disney GOALS, headquartered in Anaheim, California is a long-standing not for profit program that involves thousands of low-income youth annually through a combination of athletics, after school educational enrichment and community service. Disney GOALS is considered to be by far the largest ‘diversity’ program involving ice hockey in North America. All program offerings are made available at zero cost to participants. More than 15,000 youth have participated in GOALS programs since 1994. Their services are concentrated in Anaheim, but there are also programs operating in the city of Placentia and San Diego as well. It's headquarters and other major facilities are concentrated in a ½ square mile Anaheim area known as the Disney GOALS “Youth Opportunity Zone” (YOZ). Within this area lie the Anaheim ICE arena, the GOALS Gardens indoor arena (primarily used for roller hockey), Disney GOALS Headquarters and a newly planned “Dreamscape” project which will include two new championship tennis courts, a soccer arena and track. Neighborhood outreach is linked to the YOZ through a “GOALSFleet” of busses that are owned and operated by Disney GOALS to move hundreds of youngsters daily from their communities so they can access the free equipment, coaching and facilities.

Disney GOALS operates an interlocking portfolio of programs which serve youth ages 6 through 19 years of age. Community locations for Disney GOALS outreach and involvement are chosen based on the population’s needs and priorities of local community and institutional leaders. Some of the many Disney GOALS programs include:

Disney GOALS After School Classes- weekly education enrichment in regional communities

Disney GOALS Ice Hockey- daily at Anaheim ICE in Anaheim

Disney GOALS Roller Hockey- at GOALS Gardens in La Palma Park

Disney GOALS Tennis- featured Clinics & tennis team

A+ Opportunity Academy- GOALS morning sessions for "off-track" elementary school age youth featuring education, athletic and social enrichment

[edit] Disney GOALS After School Classes

The Disney GOALS after school classes provide both academic and athletic curriculum. Each month offers a different theme that involves hockey and other sports information in the form of academics. For example, a month is dedicated to the history of hockey, while another month involves mathematics, using hockey situations as examples. Students practice (or learn new) academic skills while learning interesting sport facts as well. Classes are organized in local neighborhood sites and youth attendance is mandatory each week.

[edit] Disney GOALS Ice Hockey

Based at Anaheim ICE Arena in central Anaheim, youngsters in GOALS play at weekly ice hockey clinics or games. All ice access, equipment, coaching, uniforms and transit to and from the arena by the GOALS Fleet are provided free to participants. Disney GOALS is the largest “diversity” program for hockey in North America. More than 1,000 youngsters participate in this centerpiece and “signature” Disney GOALS program annually.

[edit] Disney GOALS Roller Hockey

Based at GOALS Gardens indoor arena in La Palma Park, youngsters in GOALS play at weekly roller hockey clinics. These sessions serve as a time to practice skills and give a chance to play hockey on a different surface. Just like on the ice, all access, equipment, coaching and uniforms are provided free to participants. The City of Anaheim generously enables Disney GOALS to utilize this facility for the good of the community.

[edit] Disney GOALS Tennis

Disney GOALS tennis programs are the only regular free tennis available for underserved youth in any of the Orange County locations currently served by Disney GOALS. The free clinics are supported in part by a grant from the United States Tennis Association Tennis & Education Fund. Disney GOALS tennis sessions are also associated with the Disney GOALS A+ Opportunity Academy Initiative.

Disney GOALS offers other tennis opportunities through an annual summer camp that features different sports, including tennis. All participating GOALS youth have the opportunity to participate in this camp.

Periodic after school tennis clinics and scholarships for additional competitive tennis opportunities are also offered by Disney GOALS. Select players have the opportunity to attend tennis camps, professional matches, local junior tournaments, and an annual Disney GOALS Tennis Championship event. Recently a Disney GOALS Tennis Team has joined the Orange County USTA Junior Tennis League and has competed against other teams throughout Orange County.

[edit] Disney GOALS Community ICE Skating

Located at the Anaheim ICE arena in Anaheim, the format of the Community ICE Skating initiative is that current Disney GOALS neighborhood locations will receive an allocation of skating vouchers. The vouchers are directly proportional to the level of relative community resource participation in the program. Between 2,000 to 3,000 youth benefit from this annual free skating initiative.

[edit] A+ Opportunity Academy

The A+ Opportunity Academy program provides free academic, athletic, and social enrichment to those students who are “off-track” from their local elementary school. The academic portion of the program consists of educational games, which reinforce skills that students learned over the school year. This prepares students for when they return to school and ensures they do not fall behind or forget what they learned. An hour-long sports session gives youngsters valuable fitness opportunity. Field trips to local sights such as nearby colleges inspire A+ youth to develop and think ahead. Approximately 400 local Anaheim youngsters enjoy this unique enrichment program annually

[edit] GOALS Girls

This program is designed to meet one of Disney GOALS’ special interest groups- Girls! About 20 % of enrolled participants in Disney GOALS are females between the ages of 6 to 19. While this may seem to be a small percentage, nationally the number of females who participate in hockey programs is a mere 8% of registered players involved with the sport on a registered, amateur basis.

Since 2001, Disney GOALS has sought new ways to encourage female participation in weekly program activities including neighborhood based “hockey” themed academic session and weekly hockey games. Specialized activities for GOALS Girls have developed and includes social, athletic and academic elements, which when combined encourages additional female attendance as well as sustains longer-term involvement in the overall GOALS program. These include:

GOALS Girls On Ice: A monthly hockey session at Disney ICE for girls only. The ice hockey sessions take place at Disney Ice in Anaheim. All interested girls that live in Disney GOALS communities are bused in to the event.

Go Girls Go: The girls attend monthly meetings which include field trips and class sessions where Go Girls Go lessons that are taught at Disney GOALS HQ. These lessons cover important issues that will keep the girls in better physical and mental health.

Leading Ladies: Inspirational female CEO’s and successful women in education, business, government, etc. will visit with groups of GOALS Girls to encourage their continued educational and social progression.

[edit] GOALS Cadets

Disney GOALS teens in junior and high school volunteer their service for a mandatory 40 (or more) hours during the summer. During this “summer of service” there are 360 hours available to choose from, per person, over a six-week period as Disney GOALS typically operates 12 hours a day. Teens who serve in GOALS Cadets will be rewarded based on the number of hours they serve, above the 40-hour requirement.

[edit] Disney GOALS Project Hope

A community service project of Disney GOALS, Project Hope involves GOALS Cadets support of athletic activities for disabled youth at the HOPE school in Buena Park, California.

[edit] Tree-Mendous GOALS

A community service project of Disney GOALS in partnership with the City of Anaheim’s Utility. GOALS teens assist senior homeowners in planting shade trees to lower energy costs.

[edit] GOALS for Schools (Literacy & Sports)

This is a summertime community service outreach feature of the GOALS Cadets program in which youth and staff run a literacy and sports program for elementary school students. Cadets gain public speaking skills and increasingly develop their social skill by reading to and teaching elementary school students various sports such as field hockey and soccer. The literacy project also encourages reading in elementary school students, as approximately 1,000 students are involved annually in this program.

[edit] Pathways To Responsibility/ Be A Leader

Disney GOALS hosts a three month long community forum called “Be A Leader” which brings top leaders from the fields of government, business, education, religion, health, philanthropy, sports, and the arts together with our top teen leaders in Disney GOALS. The format for the Pathways series is rather freewheeling and informal, and offers a relaxed opportunity where speakers can share their life experiences and highlight those personal and professional characteristics which helped them achieve (and sustain) their current leadership positions. For the teen leaders in Disney GOALS the chance to hear from top flight social leaders will hopefully help raise their level of ambition to greater levels, both during their remaining tenure in Disney GOALS and beyond.

[edit] Disney GOALS Summer Sports Camp

There are multiple camp opportunities that are offered, free, to eligible GOALS youth

Vermont Camps: Seven children are sent to Camp Keewaydin(Vermont) and Camp Sogadeewin(Vermont) for a month. Full scholarships for these opportunities are provided by the Eisner Family Foundation.

Camp Titan: 10-20 of Disney GOALS youngsters are sent to a week at Cal. State Fullerton University’s “Camp Titan” in the San Bernardino Mountains in California.

Disney GOALS Tennis Camp: A summer camp that takes place during the first week of August each year. All tennis fundamentals are covered, and the camp concludes with a doubles tournament. All tennis sessions take place in Pearson Park.

Disney GOALS Baseball Camp: A summer camp that takes place during the third week of August. All baseball fundamentals are covered. Fun baseball games are played daily. All sessions are conducted at the Boysen Park Baseball Stadium in Anaheim.

Ice Hockey Mini-Camps: All participating neighborhood areas within Disney GOALS take part in full-week sessions to practice all ice hockey fundamentals. The “Mini-Camps” operate daily for 2 hours each day. This summer camp experience takes place during August each year.

Indoor Soccer Tournament at GOALS Gardens: Although it is not an actual training camp, the month-long Disney GOALS Indoor Soccer Championships provides another summer outlet for Disney GOALS participants. The tournament typically runs from mid-July to mid-August.

[edit] GOALS for Healthy Futures

This newly conceived (2008) health initiative will target unfit, obese youth in a partnership involving the Anaheim City School District and the UCI Family Health Center. The program will feature aerobic activity, nutritional educations, clinical testing and participations in regional marathons to improve fitness. The program will target central Anaheim youth.

Disney GOALS Facilities: Anaheim ICE, GOALS Gardens, DGHQ, GOALS Gym, and the Disney GOALS Dreamscape are all concentrated in a ½ square mile “Youth Oppourtunity Zone in central Anaheim.

The DG GOALSFleet: A collection of busses, truck, vans and trailers that are owned and operated by Disney GOALS. These link various low-income neighborhoods together by providing complementary service to all participating GOALS youth. Daily shuttles to GOALS Gardens, Anaheim ICE Arena, the Disney GOALS Headquarters/ Dreamscape and the Pearson Park Tennis Facility allows any child who takes part in Disney GOALS activities without having to worry about transportation.

Staffing, Coaches and Volunteers: Disney GOALS operates the many programs offered with a combination of professional full and part-time staff, AmeriCorp staff, university interns, program youth volunteers and community volunteers.

Community Partnerships: Disney GOALS, as a not for profit organization, works closely with many other community based organizations and institutions. These include foundations, corporations, local government agencies, school districts, community centers, public schools and health advocacy organizations.
