Director are a Choice Music Prize nominated [1] pop rock quartet from Malahide, Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Band members are Michael Moloney (Vocals/Guitars), Eoin Aherne (Guitars), Shea Lawlor (Drums) and Rowan Averill (Bass Guitar). [2] It is often stated in online articles about the band[citation needed] that singer Michael Moloney is Canadian or is of Canadian or American exctaction. This is untrue.[citation needed]

Director has a hook-based pop-rock sound, making their songs quite accessible. Taking their musical cues from their early encounters with the songwriting of The Beatles, Steely Dan and Randy Newman, Director cite Beck, Grandaddy, Muse and The Strokes as some of their modern day influences.

As a relatively new band, Director have gained moderate popularity within the Republic of Ireland and the UK, through their debut album and touring both on their own and as a support act for bands such as Hard-Fi, Goo Goo Dolls who they supported on their UK Let Love In tour, The Fratellis and Razorlight.

[edit] Debut album

Director produced their debut single, "Reconnect", and the accompanying self-written and co-directed video. It was released in Ireland and the UK on April 26, 2006. The Single was to be the first of 3 Irish top 10's and stayed in the Irish charts for 19 weeks. The band then went on to perform as the opening artist on the Main Stage on the Sunday at Oxegen later that summer.

Director's self-produced debut album, We Thrive on Big Cities was released on October 6 in the Republic of Ireland and included their debut single, "Reconnect". Within the first week of release, the album had reached number 2 in the Irish album sales charts, conceding the first place to Sam's Town, by The Killers. A UK release is forthcoming. The album has now gone multiplatinum in Ireland.

The second single taken from the band's debut album, "Come With a Friend", was released on September 29 of the same year, to which the video was also self-written. The third single from the album, "Leave It to Me", was released on January 5 2007 but with no corresponding video. Both these releases were solely in the Republic of Ireland.

The album was nominated for the Choice Music Prize 2006 for Irish album of the year. It was also nominated in the 'Best Irish Album' category at the 2006 Meteor Music Awards at which the band won the award for 'Best New Irish Act' and performed their single "Reconnect" live.
