[edit] Kaweah Peaks Ridge

I am afraid that the picture does not depict the Kaweah Peaks Ridge, for the most part anyways. I am very certain about that. It is a view of a section of the Great Western Divide as seen from the High Sierra Trail about 1 mile east of the Mehrten Creek crossing. From this place, the Kaweah Peaks Ridge is located behind the Great Western Divide. Only on the far left the Black Kaweah (13765') is visible and just to the right, barely visible, is the Red Kaweah with its two peaks. The remaining peaks belong to the Great Western Divide. From the left: Eagle Scout Peak (12040') appearing just a tiny bit higher than the Black Kaweah. The next three peaks are unnamed. In the center of the picture is Lippincott Mountain (12265') and the prominent peak on the right side is Mt. Eisen (12160').Theschenks 10:36, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Safari Club

Au contraire! It is one of the last "real Oregon places", very old school :) In any case, the bar is still open but the nightclub and restaurant are a Chinese restaurant. The window containing the taxidemery specimens (including the claimed world record tiger bagged in India in 1967) are still there. Certainly it has the air of a ruin. Might I ask, when were you there? -- Decumanus 04:58, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)

Oh I see you're a native. Forget I asked that question. I just moved back here after having gone to college in Salem many year ago. I also see you created the Willamette Meteorite article recently. I won't pretend I'm not jealous :) Best wishes.-- Decumanus 05:02, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)

[edit] PSU

Hey Dino, as it happens I also attended PSU (1981-85). Did you study math there? Whatever became of John Erdman? He was my all-time favorite prof, although/because his advanced calculus class nearly killed me. And I also moved to Boulder, to attend grad school. Yup, still here! Although the older I get, the less I like cold weather... Anyway, glad to see you're here, keep up the good work. Wile E. Heresiarch 15:31, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Congratulations, Dino, and Sorry!

Sorry to hear about your metacarpal, but on the positive side, it's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 20:40, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] RFC pages on VfD

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:35, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Two Collapse articles

I noticed you wrote an article under the title "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed". I also wrote one under "Collapse (book)". I guess the two articles should be merged. —Vespristiano 00:33, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

You asked whether Collapse is a 2004 book or a 2005 book. I receieved a copy of Collapse in 2004. On Amazon.com, the publication date was listed as 2004. I encourage you to settle this question. (I'll accept whatever you decide.) —Vespristiano 03:57, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Oppenheimer photo

There's no way you would have known, don't worry about it. LANL didn't label its source at all and unless I knew otherwise I would too have assumed it was a Los Alamos-owned picture. I only knew it wasn't because I once tried to secure rights for it a long time ago for a project I was working on and realized that it was a wire-press photo and thus owned by Corbis, who charges extortive licensing fees on historical photographs of that sort. Anyway, it was not your fault in the slightest! --Fastfission 19:25, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] American Old West rollback

You asked: What is the significance of Dzikie Pola to this article? And Winnetou lives underneath Karl May. Let me reply and explain why I insist they should be there: Dzikie Pola form a kind of 'Wild East' of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and so are an interesting 'see also', mostly unknown to English reader (who have likely never heard of PLC either, so no suprise here). As for Winnetou, he is more widely known then Karol May. Eventually, when this article is (finally) expanded, Dzikie Pola will likely remain just in see also, hopefully with several other similar time/places, but Karol May, Winneto, Old Shatterhand and others will surely have their own para, at least. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 21:01, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

Definetly it should be expand. I make no promises about doing it myself, though. I would love to write on it, but I have only so much time. If you would like to read more about Dzikie Pola 'setting', check my articles on PLCommonwealth (linked above), Stanisław Koniecpolski or Magnate wars in Moldavia for a good start. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 19:26, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Crystal power/healing

Hi Dino; Crystal healing is one type of crystal power, and crystal power was two sentences long before the merge. Nothing is gained by having separate articles (now they're just duplicates of each other); I'll make a sub heading called "Crystal healing" in the crystal power article. Plus, the image of a quartz crystal is just that, a quartz crystal, so it's just a "decoration" of sorts. What do you think? --CDN99 03:08, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

 • Fair enough; I'll leave the quartz in there too--CDN99 17:35, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Bonneville Salt Flats Speed racer.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bonneville Salt Flats Speed racer.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you.

The image was tagged as PD-Usgov, but it was taken from a state government website. Since it's no longer on the original site, I can't verify that it's available under another license. It needs a different license, or else we'll have to delete it. Night Gyr 07:00, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

The real issue is that it's at a Utah site, not a federal site. States don't automatically release everything into the public domain the way the fed does. Night Gyr 19:47, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello / Apology for detailed encounter with a "skeptic"

You say we have similar goals ? The reason I may be a little testy is that the skeptics I and others have ran into were abusive, even offensive. I know you are not that kind at all. One I ran into told me to," Shut that fucking shit the fucking hell up or they'll lock your fucking ass up in a damn loony bin. I don't want to hear that damn shit." In a UFO incident I came accross, a commercial pilot was asked to look at a UFO, he said that,"We don't report that shit. Good way to lose my damn job." Why are people like that ? I do humbly apologise if I had offened you. I was only telling you about one of my experiences with a person who claimed to be a "skeptic". Martial Law 07:53, 16 April 2006 (UTC) :)

We may have similar mission statements. Allies ? Martial Law 07:56, 16 April 2006 (UTC) :)

I too am skeptical of certain matters as well, incl. psychics. I grew up with the "Seeing is believing" family value myself. As stated, I know you're not the kind to go out and insult people at all. I have been caught between skeptics and believers. I have yet to see a psychic, other than what has been advertised in the media, such as "Let Sister Valdees cure your LOVE problems." or "Let White Witch Sistro cure your money problems." I've seen UFOs myself, encountered aliens, along with trigger happy neighbors myself, been around ghosts, incl. one that was a pipe smoker. We (my family) verified who the pipe smoking ghost was. I have yet to see a chupacabra, a Bigfoot (Did have a smelly encounter, but did not see a bigfoot.), vampire, a angel, a demon, other strange matter. I did investigate the famous and not so famous paranormal matters, when NOT hunting for gold, meteorites, fossils, other precious metals. I did not mean to offend you at all, and I'm humbly apologising if I have done so. I have had some really bad experiences with both skeptics and believers. One of the former threatened me, while one of the latter reported that IF there is alien contact, the planet will erupt into rebellion and pointed out the existence of private armies a.k.a. The Militia Movement. Some of these armies are devoted to religion. Again, I don't mean to offend you at all, and do humbly apologise if I had. Martial Law 03:42, 17 April 2006 (UTC) :)

I am not into the New Age phenomena at all. Martial Law 04:21, 17 April 2006 (UTC) :)

Hey, Just to say hi, thanks for all the articles and everything else on wikipedia. I added a space to "thunder egg" on the wiki page for them, as I had tried to do a search for "thunder egg" and didn't come up with anything, then googled it, and found "thunderegg". As I'm not a guru at wikipedia, the space worked. I'm sure there's a better way, but at least now it can be found by searching with or without a space in between.

[edit] Edgar Cayce

Some kid administrator (he's 16 years old) added the Dr. Little reference; I made sure that Little was Cayce-connected. This is a problem I had with certain people for a long time. They're one-sided; they won't do any serious research beyond their own b.s.; they just have to trust the word of a psychic when this same psychic couldn't even pull the winning lotto number out of a hat, much less any psychic. I have added a "prod" template to the article Nye Beach, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Please do not remove the notice without addressing the issues it mentions (it is considered vandalism). [edit] Fuzzy Zoeller edit controversy

Hello, there. As you may or may not know, the Miami Herald recently revealed that professional golfer Fuzzy Zoeller has filed a lawsuit against Josef Silny & Associates, Inc. for adding false statements to his Wikipedia biography.

For data gathering purposes, an SRS of 20 administrators has been created, you being one of them. I would like you to comment on this situation and its possible implications to Wikipedia, the accused company, and the general welfare of the community in general. (To what extent will this impact Wikipedia? To what extent will this impact those who use Wikipedia often? To what extent is the company guilty? Who do you believe is at fault?) Feel free to comment however you wish. I ask that you email me your responses via my emailuser page so as to reduce bias in your responses. (Again, don't post your responses on my talk page.)

The following are articles from various news agencies that you may use to inform yourself about the situation: Miami Herald, Herald Tribune, Web Pro News, The Smoking Gun.

I thank you for taking your time to express your opinion. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time. Jaredtalk 18:22, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Psychics

Hi Dino, I noticed your edits reverting the removal of the 'purported psychic' categories. Please review the ArbCom ruling on Adequate framing and the use of Paranormal as an effective tag. Also, please refrain from from making accusations in the edit summary [1] per WP:BLP. Let me know if you have any questions about this. – Dreadstar 20:36, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Dino, thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful response! No worries on the quick editing, there's no way you could have known about that ArbCom decision.. I'm with ya, man. It's a perplexing question as to why, with so little hard evidence, people still believe in spirits, psychic powers, mediums, mind-readers and the like... I think it's the desire to believe there's something more than what they can see and feel, perhaps to hold off the fear of dying and being no more...just ending.
It can be a scary thing, that big unknown awaiting us...and, as with all the unknowns, and how mankind has handled them (Zeus throwing lightning bolts, Thor the thundergod making thunder, fear of black cats crossing paths...), they handle that fear of the unknown by creating or believing in worlds beyond this world. And in those worlds...psychics exist.... I dunno. I respect all viewpoints..and just try to be neutral and learn what I can.
Hey, I really appreciate your nice note! It's nice to meet good people who care about 'our project', Wikipedia! I'm sorry if I sounded stern in my message..sometimes I come across that way when I'm writing things out..! If there's anything I can ever to do to help ya out, let me know! – Dreadstar 02:00, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Psychic category

Hi dino,

I've been reading your conversation with Dreadstar. You're right about the dreadful stuff that goes on- religion seems to be a holdover from our hunter-gatherer past when tribal cohesion was highly adaptive, and thinking for one's self was death. But anyway, I think it is better to just call things what they are culturally called, and then make sure that we explain the controversy in the articles, such as Psychic. Otherwise what it sounds like is that we are sneering right off the bat, and that means the articles simply can't be neutral. See this also.

But you are wrong that all "psychics" are frauds. Many really believe in their powers- I know this for a fact. Martinphi (Talk Ψ Contribs) 03:14, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Three facts for trisecting angles.jpeg

You were a bit confusing on the licensing with this image. In the description you released under the GDFL while the tag was releasing the image into the public domain. I changed the tag to the more restrictive of the two (GDFL). If you really did intend to release into the public domain, you might want to change your description (and change the tag back). Cheers! —— Eagle101Need help? 03:07, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Undular bore wave two.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Undular bore wave two.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Lake_chagan.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Lake_chagan.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 13:53, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Andrei Sakharov and Igor Kurchatov.jpeg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 04:35, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Eighth Wonder of the World

Hello. I noticed that your addition [2] to the Eighth Wonder of the World article is unsourced. In order to keep the article from spiraling out of control with WP:OR, several of us have it on our watchlists and generally trim un-sourced additions on sight. If you could source your addition via a citation template, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Kralizec! (talk) 15:06, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Derivative

Thank you for the new Image:Graph of sliding derivative line.gif. I have two requests. First, would it be possible to post the image source code on the image page, it is in the spirit of Wikipedia and may help other people understand how you made the image. Second, your blue curve is kind of wiggling, which it should not. Could you recreate the image so that it does not do that? Thanks a lot. You can reply here. I replied on my talk page. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 04:48, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Moved image

Hi! I just moved the image you added to Geometry down into the "Practical geometry" section. The problem was that with the existing image, the new one caused text to be squashed. Feel free to revert me if you don't like my change. Thanks, silly rabbit (talk) 19:53, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
