[edit] Synopsis

The episode begins with a meeting of the faculty of a high school, including the principal, the assistant principal, the gym teacher, and the school psychologist. They discuss typical concerns during such meetings, such as the next school-sponsored play. However, they end their meeting rather unusually: with a Satanic prayer.

A group of young adults go out into the forest in New Hampshire at night to play around with black magic. The experiment causes unexplainable things to happen, such as fire erupting from the ground, and rats swarming to the location. The next day one of the kids is found dead and mutilated, and Mulder and Scully are called in to investigate. Locals claim that the children have unleashed a demonic force in their rituals, a theory which is given validity by strange occurrences.

Mulder and Scully learn of an occult sect which, allegedly, have been murdering and sexually abusing children in the town for many years. The father of one of the children claiming to have been abused deny her allegations. He confesses to being part of a dark cult, but not to performing any violent rituals. Mulder handcuffs him in his house where he is killed by a snake once Mulder has left to meet Scully. The other members of the cult conspire to offer the FBI agents to the devil as sacrificial lambs. Mulder and Scully are captured, but before the ritual can be completed, Mrs. Paddock, a biology teacher, takes control over the cult members and forces them to kill themselves. The episode ends with the case remaining unresolved.

[edit] References to other parts of culture

  • The school where many of the cult members work is called "Crowley High School". The selection of this particular school name might be a reference to famous occultist Aleister Crowley.
  • "Die Hand die verletzt", is German for "The hand that wounds".
  • Another major hint that the school's name "Crowley High School" refers to Aleister Crowley is a reference made by the man while Mulder and he were in his basement during the confession speech. He said to Mulder " Do What Thou Wilt " which is the catch phrase for the OTO or Ordo Templi Orientis that Aleister Crowley founded.

[edit] Trivia

  • The episode makes a reference to a thrash metal band Megadeth, with Mulder saying to Scully: "Better hide your Megadeth albums". It is not the only X-Files episode which makes a reference to the band.
