Deborah 'Debbie' DeFrancesco Halvorson is a Democratic member of the Illinois Senate, representing the 40th District since 1997. She has been Majority Leader since January of 2005, and is the first woman to serve in that capacity.
On October 2, 2007, Halvorson announced her decision to run for Illinois' 11th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, after current incumbent Jerry Weller announced in September that he would not be running for re-election. Emily's List endorsed Halvorson in November. In February 2008, Republican nominee Tim Baldermann withdrew from the race, citing other obligations.[1]
Halvorson and her husband Jim Bush live in Crete and have four children and three grandchildren.[2] She has degrees from Robert Morris College, Prairie State College and Governors State University (Bachelor of Arts and Master's in Communication. She attended the Darden School for Emerging Political Leaders at the University of Virginia and completed the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at Harvard University.[2]
