Thank you, Jza84. I hope our obviously opposed points of view on the continued existance of the Statutory Counties will not preclude our working together in many other areas. DavidFRAS (talk) 21:26, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

I have no view on the matter, I merely write according to citation. You should probably be made aware of WP:PLACE (see "Counties of Britain") regarding counties (your view of "statutory counties" - which itself has no statutory definition - is in conflict with our encyclopedia's policy as well as the vast majority of editors). Should you wish to start making amendments to such topics, what I ask of you is to please seek a consensus first at the various policy pages, rather than begin to remove well established, cited claims about the modern county system(s). --Jza84 |  Talk  21:32, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

I have read some of those policies and the background discussions. Is the agreement of 11 Wikipedians from a pool of 6½ million a consensus? The Statutory Counties as I have mentioned them are defined in the LGA 1888. I have no intention of making any substantive changes to pages until I have absorbed far more background concerning the current editors. This does not mean that I will not attempt to point out, on discussion pages, glaring errors where I encounter them. If the articles were titled "Administrative Units of Local Government" there would be no issue. DavidFRAS (talk) 21:43, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia is built on co-operation, and also, crucially, citaion from reliable sources. Can you point to a third party source that calls the county system of England (or the UK) the "Administrative Units of Local Government"; this seems to be a made-up term, something to be avoided here on Wikipedia. --Jza84 |  Talk  23:35, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

A very brief search provided two within minutes:

"In this paper the search is performed at the level of local authorities, the administrative units of local government, as these deliver a range of services"

Health underachievement and overachievement in English local authorities

Tim Doran, Frances Drever and Margaret Whitehead - Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health 2006 60:686-693

"Each type of local authority—the administrative units of local government below regions—was represented"

Managing the Care Home Closure Process: Care Managers’ Experiences and Views

Jacquetta Williams, Ann Netten and Patricia Ware - British Journal of Social Work 2007 37(5):909-924

The EU definition of Local Administrative Units is also very close to - but not exactly word for word - a match for a description of the areas currently covered by the Wikipedia policy on Counties. DavidFRAS (talk) 23:04, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
