Dave (David Brian) Mayberry was born July 15, 1956 in Decatur, Illinois. In 1968, his family moved to Long Beach, California. He started play guitar publicly in his teens. At the age of 18, he met future band mates Doug Wooldridge and Rick Zeferjahn. In 1978, they formed with singer Steve Fontaine and Fel Michaels to form the hard rock ensemble Hustler. In 1979, with the backing of West Coast Sound, recorded a four song demo. Warner Brothers Records picked up the band & demo after Hustler's headlining gig at the Long Beach Arena. Hustler then started touring steadily to promote the now eight song Album Hustler. In one of their best shows, They headlined over soon to be renamed Snow (Quiet Riot).
Dave was married in 1979 to his first wife Bonni, and in Nov. of '79, his first born, Michael, came into the world. Dave and Bonni's life would be shattered by the death (SIDS) of their second son, Christopher. In 1983, Dave and Bonni, after more than 9 years together, 4 married, separated. Dave filed for divorce in 1983, finalized in 1984. He maintained custody of his son, Michael.
1983 was indeed a bad year for Dave, as his separation of his marriage, the death of his son in late '82, and the break-up of the band, Hustler. A contractual obligation for another recording went unreleased. Dave started playing publicly again in '85 until his second marriage in '89 to Ilene Anselmi. Dave was involved in business security (burglar alarms), and had a successful career. In the early '90's, he started playing again locally in Southern California. In 1990, His third child, Megan, was stillborn. Dave and Ilene recovered from the tragedy. In 2000, they moved to Southern Illinois.
In late 2002, he was devastated by the sudden illness and death of his wife, Ilene. He withdrew from professional and public life. His last major show was at the So. Illinois Blues & Cues Festival. Dave currently resides in the Pacific Northwest. In '05, he survived 2 heart attacks and a had a bypass operation. Musically, he plays occasionally in local clubs with Doug Wooldridge and his son, Michael Mayberry. Dave, now 51, is retired and above all, a survivor.
