[edit] Family

What is the deal on DLR's family? I am sure he must have sired some children over the years. Any truth to the rumor that Avy Lee Roth is his daughter? I feel like it should be mentioned somewhere, but his life and career are so integrated (ie. no "personal life" section) that I don't know where to start. Plus I'm lazy. Jairuscobb 04:38, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] NPOV

"Val at Free FM in Dallas thinks he's an ass." I don't know nor care who Val is and why she thinks Mr. Zippidy-Bop is an ass. Out it goes.--65.144.114.8 11:32, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jewishness

Does Roth's Jewishness affect the article? I don't think it adds anything. I was going to cut it, but don't care enough about the subject (Roth, not Judaism) to start an edit war over it. Dukeofomnium 20:00, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

It's also under Discography section. I think this should be fixed. --Hkroger 19:49, 9 Aug 2004 (UTC)

No, it doesn't seem terribly relevant. Curiously, however, Roth is the first person mentioned in Adam Sandler's The Chanukah Song. No, I'm not proposing we start using Adam Sandler as an objective measure, just saying :) -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 23:52, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I removed the bit about his being Jewish. If someone else wants to add it, fine, but it was awkward and out of place as included. Dukeofomnium 21:29, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Is there any basis for designating Roth as being Jewish, other than a song written by a popular American comedian? As I write this, the sentence in question looks as if some one tacked it on to the end of the section for comical value. If some one finds more authoritative and credible evidence than, "The Chanukah Song," he should offer it and integrate the information smoothly into the article, not just slap a sentence in anywhere. -Art —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.142.101.150 (talk) 19:59, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image?

This is a great Roth page; however it would be better with a photo, I think. Does anyone have one to post?

I just finished reading it for the first time and was about to post the same thing :S

agreed, it's definitely lacking Oreo man 17:44, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ukraine?

I thought his grandparents were Russian. Can anyone confirm this?

Ukraine was a part of USSR you idiot though I doubt you know what USSR means! - American Education! People in America don't even know where they live, where USA on the map of world is, so no wonder they don't know where Ukraine is or part of what it used to be. Thank God I am not American and I do not live in the USA full of illiterate people.

Seriously, this is not the place for flames, this is for article discussion. Anyways, the point is moot, it doesn't matter where they're from. If you can't help with additional information, please don't waste your breath, okay? Armslurp 02:26, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

None of his grandparents was from Portugal. They were primarily CritterHill 02:44, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Lithuanian.

[edit] Rock's two greatest singers?

"Many consider Roth one of rock and roll's two greatest frontmen"

I don't think this statement has much truth in it. In fact I don't know anyone who feels this way and I can name a few frontmen who are generally held in higher regard than David Lee Roth; Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Kurt Cobain and many many more. I think this statement was made with your PoV in mind and wasn't based on much else. -- User:Zoso Jade

Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones are good, but not him), Steven Tyler (incredible), Kurt Cobain (ehhhh)........and Rob Halford!! (lead singer of Judas Priest, for those who dont like/know/care about the band). Now go download Diamonds and Rust by Judas Priest, and you'll know why I added him....
sounds like original research -- banned by wikipedia dictate. wikipedia isn't interested in your opinions unless they're in some official document proclaiming you to be a genius. that's the short version of the policy or guideline or whatever it is. regardless, stating taste as fact is usually a waste of time, here and elsewhere. please sign your comments next time (enter "~~~~" and it turns into a sig on preview and save. like this:) Wbfl 04:31, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 1993 Incident

Can't we ignore the pointless mention of this? Does it really concern music?? This ain't court, folks!

it's mentioned because it was the only significant publicity he'd received in years, and, unfortunately, had a role in shaping the public's perception of him all the way through today. this article is about david lee roth, not music. much of DLR is publicity. doesn't matter whether we're happy about the arrest or what happened because of it. it's notable, and your attempt above to rebut its inclusion is illogical. Wbfl 13:49, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, but this isn't Ghandi, MLK Jr., or Rosa Parks we're talking about here. This is more gossipy than historically important. I equate this incident's relevance to Sammy's alleged alien abduction (i.e., who cares??). DLR has gotten tons of publicity in his lifetime, so there just isn't enough room for every lame incident to be mentioned in here. This article is about a musician, not the perception of him by his fans. Nevertheless, I'll let subsequent editors decide.
-- Armslurp 00:22, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
DLR wasn't getting tons of publicity at that time. that's the point. he was getting none. it was relevant to his music career and his life. it's potentially a major reason he was gone for so long. for a few years it was the only thing people talked about when his name came up. why? i don't know. i think it's stupid. but the publicity a public figure receives can be relevant in an encyclopedic article about that person. when a seemingly unimportant issue becomes all people talk about in relation to a person, its importance grows. if you want to have a strict prohibition against public perception factors being included, then remove all references to record sales, concert attendance, etc. — all mere measures of public perception at the root. DLR's career took a dive, and he was kicked while he was down. i don't agree with it, and it pisses me off that we live in a world where supposedly respectable people think it's their business what somebody else smokes — to the point where the scattershot can derail a man's career. however, that's what happened, and if you look at that period, it's about all that happened as far as the public's concerned. is it absolutely necessary to include? i don't know. but it sure isn't a clear area for deletion either. if it's here, and it was, may as well leave it, since, contrary to your ploy above, we do have room for it. this is not a paper encyclopedia, and nobody's trying to include everything that ever happened to roth. Wbfl 03:34, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
haha man, consider your ass kicked Armslurp :) excellent rant, Wbfl Oreo man 17:51, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] restraint

if you're going to turn the article into a rambling biography of knicknackery with these recent edits, please at least try using somewhat conventional syntax, grammar, spelling, and flow. this is supposed to be an encyclopedia, not a dumping ground for backyard BBQ anecdotes, delivered as though the alcohol were flowing. article was bad enough without these recent slaps of slop. i'm not going to clean it up either. Wbfl 20:29, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Was this criticism written while alcohol was flowing, Wbfl? This page has better syntax, grammar, and sentence structure than most. (Especially pop culture articles)! Are you trying to say that you'd like shorter sentences? Regardless, the grammar is correct, and the "knicknackery" is informative. 71.234.216.249

[edit] One of the Rocks Greatest Frontmen

Alongside Robert Plant and Kurt Cobain, Roth was able to project high velocity and swerving dynamic range. He fused blues and funk with metal well before Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers or Rage Against the Machine with the exception of Jimi Hendrix [15:59, 13 January 2006 217.137.44.5]

If this is what you want to add to the article, go ahead. Others may moderate your tone but you seem to me to have the kernel of a reasonable observation. But it does no good to put it here on the Talk page, put it in the real article! And please stop removing past comments from the Talk page. Wasted Time R 16:17, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Actually, look at the similar claim above...do NOT put that into the article. Read up on NPOV or original research if you care to know why. Jairuscobb 04:35, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] End of the David Lee Roth show

Ah, see I didn't know he went back on the air after the songs, because I had arrived at work by then and didn't get to hear if he came back on or not... but apparently he did.. - SoniK Traveler [04.21.06]

[edit] concatenate info on this page and Roth Show page?

wouldn't it be appropriate to take some of the latter stuff off of this page and move it to the DLR Show page, or at least mirror the info there?

Yes ~~

[edit] Strummin' with the Devil

Is this considered a DLR album, or merely a tribute album featuring him? It's currently listed as a Dave album, but I'm not sure it technically is. --cholmes75 (chit chat) 04:04, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

On the album cover on Amazon.com, it says "A Tribute ... Featuring David Lee Roth" plus he only (apparently) sings on two songs ("Jump" and "Jamie's Cryin'"). I haven't bought the album, though (yet?). Armslurp 05:19, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] changed homosexual to flamboyant

enough said

Funny, on an early August 2006 edition on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson", both Craig and guest Sammy Hagar seemed to throw in innuendo that Roth is... I don't know, nor do I really care, but it just seemed peculiar for them to bring that up. Jude86 05:53, 5 August 2006 (UTC) 05:52, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Latverian"?

Did he invent this language himself?--Son of Somebody 03:46, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

And why is it still in the article? Tirolion 20:52, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Birth year

My research favours 1953 as the year of his birth.

There is often a fudge between 1953, 1954, or even 1955, but I feel I may be correct. Please do not quote his "official website", or some such, as the greatest reliable source. In my experience, these invariably perpetuate any earlier attempts to mislead us all (quite a frequent practice, right across pop music).

Derek R Bullamore 21:11, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

  • I believe that you're correct. This is the date cited in Roth's 1998 autobiography. 24.2.244.245 20:39, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Birth year in the main article has been changed to 1953 accordingly. Please feel free to argue the point, if you have some decent evidence.
Derek R Bullamore 22:56, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A little aint enough Tour

in his autobiography he says the statues spat jack daniels (or cheaper equivalent) not vodka. 88.106.159.187 14:04, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame Inductee?

The category tags list Dave as being an inductee of the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame. This is incorrect, yes? no? I.M. 18:03 February 22, 2007

  • Nope, it's correct.

[edit] Mel Brooks History of the World Part I

Does anyone know if David Lee Roth appeared in this movie? He walks like him, talks like him and looks like him when he says "who knows Toq, you might win a buck". He would have been 27 years old in this movie. Any ideas? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.116.22.226 (talk) 21:43, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Roth moving to California

Will someone please research this and include the correct information? Did he move to Cali with his family? Did he move by himself? My first thought when I read this was "Oh, he moved out of his parents' house and went to California by himself?" Not that this couldn't happen, but if it didn't, the sentence is misleading. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Van-Halen-At-the-Whiskey-A-Go-Go.jpg

Image:Van-Halen-At-the-Whiskey-A-Go-Go.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
