Standing only 5-foot-5, Pang was one of the shortest players ever in the modern era of the NHL. It was often joked that he was the only goalie with a "6 hole," right above his head. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1988. He was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks on August 15, 1984. He also set a Blackhawks goaltender's record with 6 assists in the 1987–1988 NHL season. Pang suffered a career-ending knee injury on September 21, 1990.

Today, Pang is a colour commentator for the Phoenix Coyotes TV broadcasts and a part time playoff analyst for TSN. He was recently named an "Inside the Glass" reporter for regular season and playoff action for The NHL on NBC. Pang also contributes to Home Ice, XM Satellite Radio's all-hockey channel. Before joining the Coyotes, he was the #2 analyst for The NHL on ESPN and The NHL on ABC, as well as a reporter for NBC's coverage of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Pang's best friend is former Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman; he was the best man at Yzerman's wedding. On Tuesday, January 2, 2007, Pang served as the master of ceremonies for Yzerman's jersey retirement cermony, which was held at Joe Louis Arena prior to a game between the Red Wings and the Anaheim Ducks.
