[edit] English vs British

This is in reference to a recent edit I made. If you disagree, please see the relevant Wikipedia policy first: WP:MOSBIO. I quote: "Nationality (In the normal case this will mean the country of which the person is a citizen or national, or was a citizen when the person became notable. Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability.)". The term "English" is an ethnic term, the term "British" is a national term, therefore the latter should be used in the introductory paragraph of biographies of Englishmen. 128.208.76.76 00:53, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm no nationalist, but I'm afraid this is one of my bugbears. If you did the same thing to a Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish person it wouldn't have lasted a minute. Also, if you quote, from the MOSBIO: "In the normal case this will mean the country of which the person is a citizen or national, or was a citizen when the person became notable", then I don't see how that can be anything other than England, thus English. SteveLamacq43 22:21, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
I don't care if its your bugbear. England is not a sovereign country, I'm sorry. It is an ethnic group. And I have indeed this morning corrected the articles of:
   * Daniel Craig
   * Desmond
   * Sean Connery
   * Catherine Zeta-Jones
   * Dylan Thomas
   * George Best

which were not reverted. I'm sorry, but I will not bow the Wikipedia policies to your personal opinion, or even a prevailing view, if it is incorrect. The country is the United Kingdom, the nationality British. Please see User:Laddiebuck/Nationalism for a fuller explanation, and User:Laddiebuck for my "progress" in making these corrections. I would be very glad if you would join me in correcting this on the biographies of other famous people from the UK. laddiebuck 01:41, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

What utter nonsense. To be honest, you ruined any point you may or many not have had when you had the arrogance to completely shoot down my opinion, ignore any previous discussions about this topic, and then refer me to an essay you yourself have written to back up your claims! I can see you've got no support elsewhere either, so here's hoping you'll desist.SteveLamacq43 14:31, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Please note that "English" is not an ethnicity! England is a civic nation, composed of many different ethnic strands. England is a nation, and the adjective for something or someone from a nation is a nationality: "English" is a nationality, per WP:MOSBIO. --Mais oui! 08:33, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Note all Laddiebuck's edits have been reverted, and he has been warned not to do this again. Proto  22:21, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
English is a nationality, as is Scottish, Welsh, Irish, etc. See http://www.steadfasttrust.org.uk/images/2007_test_H1_form.gif for a sample pic of a census form. Look at question 12. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.141.25.122 (talk) 21:34, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Which doesn't mention "nationality," but rather "national identity." 00:59, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

English is most *certainly* a term for an ethnic group, distinct from it's use as a nationality. For example, I am (mostly) ethnically English and am a citizen of the UK residing in England. Therefore both my ethnicity and nationality happen to be English. *However* if I were to move to say, Canada, and become a citizen of that nation, my nationality would have changed to Canadian, but my ethnicity would have remained the same, English. --86.135.218.31 (talk) 04:14, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cheshire

The Wirral is not part of Cheshire; it is part of Merseyside. The statements regarding Craig's early life in 'Cheshire' are therefore not correct. Can somebody make the relevant corrections? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.220.86.40 (talk) 15:03, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Semi-lock please

  • BAFTA-nominated Mentioning awards/nominations in the first sentence can be considered POV as it glorifies the subject (feel free to mention awards in later sentences)

  • agent James Bond in the official film series from EON Productions - The reader does not need to know anything about EON productions as it is irrelevant in the lead
    • Y Done Vikrant 15:45, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
  • The lead only mentions information about his career as Bond, you need to expand it to include a brief mention of his entire life for example add a sentence like "Brought up in Frodsham, Craig joined the National Youth Theatre at the age of sixteen. Graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1991, Craig's first film roles included.... etc Mention that CR is also the highest grossing bond film (i think it was..)

    • Y Done Vikrant 15:45, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
  • Don't link single years such as 1991 by themselves, they add nothing to the article

Broccoli in 1996 and Harry Saltzman in 1994. Merge these sentences, mention the year Dr No. was released, remove link to 1996
    • Y Done This is unnecessary trivia. Vikrant 10:50, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
