The Danube University Krems (subtitled University of Continuing Education Krems; German: Donau-Universität Krems and Universität für Weiterbildung Krems, respectively) calls itself "the only state-funded university throughout Europe that has specialised in post-graduate academic studies". It is located in Krems an der Donau, Lower Austria.

The first 93 students enrolled in 1995, when the institution began operation with programmes in European Studies and journalism.[1] In 2004, the Austrian parliament passed the Danube University Act (DUK-Gesetz) granting the institution the rights of a full university (such as appointing its own professors).

Today, more than 3,700 students study at Danube University.

On February 2, 2007, rector Helmut Kramer resigned due to "conceptional differences on strategic leadership".^[1] In May 2007 Prof Heinrich Kern was assigned as the new rector. The interim rector, Prof Ada Pellert, who also had applied, was not considered on the shortlist of three by the nomination committee. This was followed by protests in the university senate claiming the decision to be gender-discriminating.^[2]

On August 8, 2007, Danube University issued a statement that the discussions on the rector's nomination are based on structural problems in the university. So Danube University has decided to split the oranisation into two universities. Professors Kern and Pellert were asked to apply for the positions of the two universities' rectors.^[3]
