Danish Dance Theatre

Danish Dance Theatre is Denmark's largest modern dance company and was founded in 1981 by the English / Norwegian choreographer Randi Patterson. The company engages in cooperative ventures with leading authors, painters and composers. The music ranges from classical masterworks to jazz, rock and original compositions. This course continued to be followed under the subsequent leadership of the American Warren Spears and the Dane Anette Abildgaard.
Under Tim Rushton, the company's current artistic leader and chief choreographer, Danish Dance Theatre's efforts to unite the classical artistic genres with the modern have reached international attention. The company's dancers are recruited from the whole of Europe; Danish Dance Theatre has in total 17 permanent artistic and administrative employees.
The company receives approximately 8 million Danish crowns which it receives from the Danish Ministry of Culture, the Danish Arts Council's theatre initiative and Copenhagen's Theatre. This is roughly on third of their annual budget; the balance is made up through support of private foundations, funds and donations.
Danish Dance Theatre was until 2005 a touring company without a permananent venue of its own but that year received a theatre and studio at Folketeatret in Copenhagen. The company continues to tour extensively within Denmark as well as overseas and annually presents between 80 and 90 performances; in the 2005-2006 season their total public attendance was approx. 30,000,
The company completed a one month residency at New York's Joyce SoHo during which they showed work in progress for their 2008 site specific production, Labyrinth.
