Some important cultures that followed the Archaic period were:[1]
- the St. Johns culture, covering the watershed of the St. Johns River and the Atlantic coast just ot the east of it. This culture survived until European contact, and was practiced by many villages of the Timucua Indians and by the Mayacas.
- the Deptford culture, covering the Florida Panhandle and the Florida peninsula west of the St. John's culture down to Tampa Bay or Charlotte Harbor. This culture and its successors were strongly influenced by the contemporary Mississippi culture. The Deptford culture fragmented into:

- the Cades Pond culture in the north central Florida peninsula. Cades Pond evolved into the Alachua culture, coterminous with the territory of the Timucuan-speaking Potano tribe encountered by the Spanish.

- the Swift Creek culture and the Santa Rosa-Swift Creek culture along the northwestern portion of the Florida peninsula and across the Florida panhandle. These related cultures evolved into the Weeden Island culture over most of the Swift Creek territory, then into the Fort Walton culture, but the area north of the Cades Pond-Alachua culture territory evolved into the McKeithen culture, and then into the Suwannee culture. The western part of the panhandle eventually saw the Pensacola culture. The Apalachee tribe was part of the Fort Walton cultural area at the time of first European while Timucuan-speakers occupied the Suwannee culture area.
- the Caloosahatchee culture, around the estuary of the Caloosahatchee River, reaching north to Charlotte Harbor. It was the core area of the Calusa tribe at the time of first European contact.
- the Okeechobee Basin culture, including the area around Lake Okeechobee and the middle and lower Kissimmee River valley. The Mayaimi tribe lived around Lake Okeechobee.
- the Glades culture, covering the lower east coast of Florida, the Everglades, the Florida Keys, and the west coast of Florida south of approximately the present site of Naples, Florida. The Tequesta and Jaega tribes were part of the Glades culture.
