From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I see nobody's given you the welcoming speech yet. *Ahem.*

Hello Daibhid, welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you ever need editing help visit Wikipedia:How does one edit a page or how to format them visit our manual of style. Experiment at Wikipedia:Sandbox. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit Wikipedia:Naming conventions. If you have any other questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump.

(And no, I can't remember offhand which author bio you nicked that joke from, either.)

I'm not entirely happy about Image:Amcoa.jpg. I have a feeling that it is against Wikipedia policy to use images whose terms of permission exclude third-party use. --Paul A 09:15, 2 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Only if that restricts others. It's routine in publishing to seek permission, even very limited permission, when it's not really needed. That provides protection against a time and money wasting legal case. It's a prudent step for many uploaders and is likely to be required much of the time when non-US people use items which qualify for fair use in the US. Sometimes US people assume incorrectly that having a license that's restrictive restricts the right to fair use, which isn't the case. Even in the US for fair use materials, it's just a cheap way for the uploader to get legal protection. Jamesday 08:12, 13 May 2004 (UTC)

I have moved a couple of your Red Dwarf pages to more sensible places. I hope you don't mind. --Moochocoogle 18:36, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Not at all. That's how Wikipedia works, after all, and you're right- the new headings are more sensible. --Daibhid C

Very much thanks is very much required for me to give to you. My List of Fictional Witches was a bit...empty. Being that it was my first page, it required all the help it could recieve. User:capitolZ

[edit] Legislation in Scots

On Scots language you added: "although the Scottish Parliament makes legislation available in Scots, as well as English and Gaelic."

Apart from a leaflet and a report to the Education and sports comitte I am not aware of any Legislation avaible in Scots. Do you have any sources for this information?

Is Scots really an official language in Scotland? Any sources?

To answer your second question first, one source was Wikipedia itself, which lists it as such on the Scotland page. The Scottish Parliament seems to give it the same status as Gaelic, which is considered an official language. On the other hand, it's not on any street signs, and I don't believe the language bill specifically gives it that status; but then, the same could be said for Gaelic.
I dunno. I've deleted that bit until I've got more info.
As for the legislation, well I was having difficulty navigating the Parliament site and took someone's word for it. I've changed it to something I actually know for a fact, namely that the website itself offers Scots as a language option. I should have known better, and apologise.

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Discworld

Wikipedia:WikiProject Discworld

Spam message: Having noticed you have made some great additions to the Discworld articles I thought you might be interested in this new WikiProject. It's at a very early stage and needs quite a bit of work. violet/riga (t) 21:45, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] List of postal codes in the United Kingdom

In the list of fictional post codes you put "FX - Fairfax". Could I ask you to tell me the source of this information? You'll have to reply here as I'm an anon. Thanks, --JS.

I'd forgotten about that. I'm afraid I cannot recall or find the source of the information, although I do recall I stumbled across it while double-checking AM for Ambridge. I'll remove it until I can get more info. Daibhid

[edit] WikiProject Shannara

I noticed that you have made several Shannara edits, and would like to know if you would like to join WikiProject Shannara, a WikiProject devoted to creating and improving Shannara-related articles. Thanks, Alex Nisnevich (talk) (02:38, 13 August 2005 (UTC)).

[edit] Wikiproject Doctor Who

Hi! I noticed you editing some Doctor Who articles today. and thought that I would let you know that you can join a project devoted to editing the various articles related to the Doctor. If you have any questions, ask me on my talk page (click "Jelly Baby?" in my signature), or on the Wikiproject talk page. Thanks!--Sean Jelly Baby? 18:59, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Stealth chess.PNG

Thank you for uploading the image, relating to Discworld's Stealth Chess. However, I would like to ask you to use an appropriate copyright tag so that its copyright status can be known. (Images with missing copyright status are not permitted on Wikipedia.) You have made the image yourself using other images on Wikipedia, so the most obvious choice is GFDL-self, indicating that you submit the image on Wikipedia under the terms of GFDL license.

[edit] Help and support needed.

It would appear as though there are certain "editors" who wish to remove the lesser known literary punk genres, not only is this a blatant witch hunt which emerged from my argument on the Dark City talk page that the movie is a relveant component in reference to the dieselpunk genre, but also extremely vindictive against myself and those who have helped in categorising and adding content to the literay punk genres. For further info: Talk page here Piecraft 17:28, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wow-Wow sauce

Please provide a source for the non discworld portion of this article. Thanx.TheRingess 00:41, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar

Thanks for the kind words. Some people seem to resent me cleaning up their edits, and I'm glad you don't. It seems a trifle immodest and bad form to choose your own barnstar, but in this case since you ask, given the two, I think that the Diligence one seems more appropriate... --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 22:36, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks again. I'll wear it with pride. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 23:32, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

stop removing my edit on the name thaum please.

[edit] Boo!!

Hi Daibhid. I just wanted to let you know that I've recently created a Wikipedia account, thus breaking my habit of editing articles anonymously. Feel free to visit. You know me better as 8'FED. Zerrakhi 09:35, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

This user once bought an apple.
This user's favourite colour is Octarine.

Daibh, here are some ideas of mine. I haven't made them into templates but if there's a demand for them I might. What do you think? Zerrakhi 05:46, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

!!NEW!! I've created an "improved" version of the octarine userbox, using elipses for the link. That way the link is there, but it doesn't make the word "octarine" unreadable. Check it out at User:Zerrakhi/details and please tell me what you think. Zerrakhi 05:10, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Porridge

Alright mate (and your awkward nameing system). I noticed you added some stuff from that porridgr mockumentary they did recently. I've not seen it but I found you edits interesting. I was wondering if there was any mention of Barrowclough or Mackay (obviously Fulton whatsisname is dead and Wilde hasn't been on TV in years, but they still mentioned Godber). Any interesting information from that episode and the characters lives after the series would be greatly appreciated, even if you just tell me about it on me talk page rather than add it to the article. I assure you I am not a twat.--Crestville 18:18, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Indian Heroes

Hello, Daibhid, thanks for the heads-up on the "Indian Superheroes". I will add your links and remove the "seven" comment. I just added the whole thing as trivia because "Krrish" was several times praised as the "first Indian Superhero", which is just not true. --Plumcouch 23:19, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Trivial: in case you care

 • I created a new userbox today - this one's about phonetics. It's on my userpage.
 • User Alnaschar suggested to me recently that the real life personality of Biddy Early resembles Nanny Ogg.

[edit] List of fictional characters who lack bravery

I've added the "prod" template to the article List of fictional characters who lack bravery, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:List of fictional characters who lack bravery. You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. [edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Hogfather-movie.JPG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Hogfather-movie.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Improving CFS/ME Article

Hi, I've noticed you recently made a contribution or regularly contribute to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I recently nominated it as the Wikipedia:Improvement Drive. I feel that it needs urgent improvement, and if you agree please vote at the Improvement Drive project page. Thanks! Thedreamdied 02:09, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Clockpunk

Clockpunk, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Clockpunk satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Clockpunk (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Clockpunk during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Eyrian 17:21, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] re: Discworld

I thought you deserved an explanation as to my spate of undiscussed mergers throughout Wikipedia's Discworld domain. The simplest answer is that I did it to save those articles from deletion. I edit a number of fantasy-related Wikipedia topics (Harry Potter in particular) and have seen those topics shredded by angry Wikipedians determined to eliminate anything they see as irrelevant (in their terms, "irrelevant" means, "a work of fantasy fiction I don't like or haven't heard of"). Largely due to the fact that so few people edit it, the Discworld domain on Wikipedia has remained relatively unscathed (though the Minor Discworld concepts article has faced one deletion attempt, and may face another); however, as the Cruft-Warriors forces grow, it is only a matter of time before the two of us are forced to fight back their advances. What mainly draw their claws are relatively obscure articles relating to a fantasy fiction universe, such as descriptions of the Archchancellor or Parasite universes. The best way to protect these articles is to merge them together into topics which also include less obscure elements, such as the Unseen University or Death's Domain. As Vetinari says, alloys are stronger, and the more we can keep topics linked together, the less likely they are to be destroyed. That is no guarantee that they will be safe, and there have already been some fairly ludicrous attempts at deletion for Discworld topics, but things are looking up at present. As to why I haven't discussed the mergers, well, since the two of us are the only editors who regularly tackle Discworld, it seemed I would only be discussing the matter with you, and I didn't really want to chance that you might go off on a month's holiday. Serendipodous 19:34, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Thundlight1.PNG

Thanks for uploading Image:Thundlight1.PNG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 02:32, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Alistaire" vs. "Alistair" Stuart

I found your edits to Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, and just have to satisfy my curiosity. Given what I read in the linked-in article via the name Alistair Stuart, I must ask why you went to the trouble to drop the final "e" from the visible text in the Brig's article? I repeat, I'm curious, not challenging. Ted Watson (talk) 21:25, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Eastgate Shopping Centre

can i say thanks for the additional info that you included in the Eastgate extension, which i am very grateful for, since i was struggling to find info for the article to contain. if you don't mind, i moved the mention of the noah's ark into the introduction since i felt it didn't fit in with the construction of the shopping centre.

although i do not come from Inverness (the lang toun is my home or better put it "offically Scotland's largest town without a cinema since 2000"), i have been a visitor to the city and the shopping centre so i have actually seen this place for real. i have to say, it's one of Scotland's most impressive places ranking alongside Perth and Stirling.
