[edit] Background and writing
The song, composed by Robert Nyel (text) and Gaby Verlor (music), was recorded originally by the Franch singer Juliette Greco in 1967. It was covered by Farmer in 1988, and this song was included in the track listing of her second studio album, Ainsi soit je....
The release of this second single from the live album Avant que l'ombre... à Bercy was officially announced on January 26, 2007, and was appreciated by the majority of Farmer's fans, according to polls made on various websites about Mylène Farmer, underlining that this song was considered as the best choice for a second live single. On 2 February, the song was aired on radio in its live version for the first time. The promotional CD was sent a few days later to the radio stations. However, the song was almost never broadcast on radio (never aired on NRJ). Before the CD single's content became known, a rumour had announced that a new remix of "Je te rends ton amour" would be featured as second title.[1] That was erroneous, since the second track was "Porno graphique", in the 2006 live version.
"Déshabillez-moi" is available in a studio version on Ainsi soit je... and in a live version on En concert and Avant que l'ombre... à Bercy. During one live performance of the song in 1989, Farmer wore restrictive black dress with sleeves that greatly limited her arm movement, effectively an bondage dress.[2] Dress rendered her unable to undress herself, which explains why she wore it for the song of which title would be translated to English as "undress me". This is only known occasion of Farmer wearing something like that.
[edit] Lyrics and music
The song refers to the nudity of a woman, the latter "asking a man to undress her in different ways".[3] In the album and live versions of the song, Farmer shows that she has humour and plays to "imitate successively the voice of a little girl, a femme fatale, a bourgeois, a managing woman..."[4] Around the end, she yells a huge "Déshabillez-moi", and finishs the song with the words "Et vous / Déshabillez-vous !".
[edit] Music video
The video was aired on television for the first time on February 15, 2007. It is an excerpt from the 2006 concert and doesn't contain new images.[1] In it, Farmer wears black clothing, including a bra which seems to be made of feathers.
[edit] TV performances
Farmer performed the song in two TV shows at the end of 1980s : Les Oscars de la mode, broadcast on TF1 on October 21, 1987, and Les Uns et les Autres, aired on TF1 on April 29, 1988. At this occasion, Farmer revealed by mistake one of her breasts.[4]
[edit] Charts performances
The single debuted at number 10 on French SNEP Singles Chart on March 10, 2007, with 6,369 sales. It was thus the 32th Top 10 of Farmer in France, which is to date the record. Like the previous Farmer's singles, it kept on dropping the weeks after, and stayed for 10 weeks in the Top 50, and 17 weeks on the chart.[5] The song also reached #66 in French Airplay Chart.[6] In Belgium (Wallonia), the single featured in the Ultratop 40 for five weeks, from March 17 to April 21 peaking at number 19 in its second week.[7] In Switzerland, the single stayed only for one week, at number 81, on March 25.[8]
