Coming of Age in Mississippi is the autobiographical account of Anne Moody, an African American girl growing up in rural Mississippi in the middle of the 20th century. The story follows Anne Moody, from her childhood through elementary school, high school and college, and eventually the Civil Rights Movement. The author gives a first hand account of the extensive racism that existed in the south during that period.
Coming of Age in Mississippi in Relation to Women Because of its first hand account Coming of Age in Mississippi offers many insights into the the treatment of black women during the 1950s and 1960s. It also gives good insight into the involvement of black women in the Civil Rights Movement. Moody recalls many stories of her family as she grew up and the difficulties they faced. The hardships against the women in her life who were trying to survive in a sexist and racist environment are prevalent. She also gives good information on the role of women during the Civil Rights Movement. There are stories where she is working along key members of the movement. She tells her experiences of having to work alongside men at rallies and protests and meetings, but still having to do secretarial work, cook and clean. She also discusses her frustrations with being a woman in the movement and having to deal with constant protection and containment.
