Coffeehouse (event)

A Coffeehouse is a social event, usually held to raise awareness for a social cause or other event.

Coffeehouses get their name from the fact that most Coffeehouses are held in an actual coffeehouse, either that or they serve coffee as one of the primary beverages. Also common are soda, milk, and tea. Common foods include cookies, crackers, muffins, and various other snack foods. Some coffeehouses have free admission, but others require a small entrance fee.

Amnesty International sponsors many coffee houses, in colleges, high schools, and coffeehouses. Amnesty will try to raise awareness for social issues around the world, such as brutal dictators oppressing their people, food or fresh water shortages, or outbreaks of disease in poorer countries. The money collected as the entrance fee can be used to aid the situation, or if the situation is more social in nature, there can be a mass signing of letters to the parties committing the offense, in an effort to put them in the global limelight.

Many high schools around the country also hold "Coffee Houses" as an opportunity for students to socialize with friends while enjoying beverages found in most coffee houses, such as coffee or hot chocolate. Many Coffee Houses also allow students from the school to perform songs, dances, poetry reading, stand-up comedy, or other talents as entertainment during the event.^[1]
