Codex Marianus

The Codex Marianus is a Gospel book that is (along with Codex Zographensis), one of the oldest manuscript witnesses to the Old Church Slavonic language. Written in the Glagolitic script in the early Eleventh Century, Codex Marianus was discovered by Victor Grigorovich at Mount Athos during a journey to the Balkans in 1844-45. It forms the base text for the scientific edition of the Slavonic gospels in the series Novum Testamentum Palaeoslovenice.

In its present state the parchment manuscript consists of 174 folios, with two columns to each page. The first part of the manuscript, to Matthew 5.22, is missing. The first two extant folios (containing Matthew 5.23 - 6.16) are now in the Austrian Nationalbibliothek in Vienna under the catalog number Cod. Slav. 146. The bulk of the manuscript (Matthew 6.16 to the end of John) is in the Russian State Library in Moscow where it carries the catalog number грнг 6 (M.1689). Folio 134 was added as a replacement in the Fourteenth Century.
