[edit] History

After the end of the War of Canudos, the rowing increased its popularity among the Recife people, being disputed many competitions along the Capibaribe river. One rowing group, commanded by João Victor da Cruz Alfarra, prepared a boat race to entertain General Artur Costa and his soldiers, who fought in the war. The boat race was disputed on November 21, 1897. After this competition, a year later, another rowing group was formed, by warehouse employees at Duque de Caxias and Rangel streets. They founded a club called Clube dos Pimpões. The other group members, who organized the rowing competition in the previous year, became encouraged, and in 1898 they played against Club dos Pimpões several times at Casa dos Banhos.

On April 7, 1901 these two rival groups of rowing players joined and founded Clube Náutico Capibaribe. The first colours adopted were blue and white[1].

Only since 1905 Náutico started its football department, and the first team was set in the following year, and was formed by Englishmen, but they played only on Sundays at Campo de Santana or at Derby prairie. Náutico were known as "the club of the riches" as in its start it didn't allow Negros to play in its football team.

[edit] 6 Championships in a Row

Náutico won 6 state championships in a row through the 1960s, in the years 1963-68, with a team that featured stars like centre-forward Bita and midfielder Ivan Brondi. This team is considered by some to be one of the stronger sides outside the Paulista and Carioca championships in this era, after the Cruzeiro and Gremio sides of the same period.

[edit] 2005 Defeat (The Aflitos Battle)

On November 26, 2005, Náutico was very close to returning to the Brazilian top division. Playing against Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense at home, in Recife, they needed a win to secure a spot in the Brazilian first division. Having already missed a penalty shot in the first half, the team were awarded another penalty kick in the second half, following a personal foul that resulted in the sending off of 4 players on Grêmio's side. That penalty kick was also missed. Náutico then had a player sent off. Despite being outnumbered 7 to 10 players, it was Grêmio who scored and secured a spot in the 2006 First Division league.

[edit] 2006 Comeback

On November 18, 2006, Náutico won a match against Ituano by 2-0 at home, and returned to the Brazilian top division, less than a year after the defeat of 2005. The club hasn't participated in the Brazilian top division for 12 years. This match was watched by more than 25,000 paying and non-paying Náutico supporters. The Náutico supporters sing a song about this: "Here where I cried, any one would cry, but to come back as I did, I want to see who else could." In Portuguese: "Aqui onde eu chorei, qualquer um chorava, mas dar a volta por cima como eu dei, quero ver quem dava."

In 2007, Náutico's comeback was somewhat stunted by failure to win either round of the State Championships, instead losing out to local rivals Sport Recife. However, this was more than made up for by the fact that on April 26 they beat Corinthians 2-0 in São Paulo to progress to the last 8 of the Brazil Cup. This ranks as one of the club's biggest achievements to date.

[edit] Rivalry

Náutico has a major strong rivalry with Sport Club do Recife, where their derbies are known as Clássico dos Clássicos ("The Derby of the Derbies", in Portuguese). It is one of the oldest, most traditional and intense derbies in Brazilian football history, since Sport was born from a dissident group from the then elitist Náutico, being an antagonical club in its colours and uniform style. This derby has complex social implications that continue until today.

Náutico's other local rival is Santa Cruz. The rivalry between the two clubs is known as Clássico das Emoções ("The Derby of the Emotions").
