Clinton Woods (born May 1, 1972), is a boxer from Sheffield, England. Growing up in tough surroundings, he was involved in a life of drugs and crime before taking up boxing as an escape. He is a big Sheffield Wednesday fan, and has paraded his belts at home games in recent years. He trains on the tough Gleadless Valley estate and is managed by Dennis Hobson, another avid Wednesday fan. His boxing career started off strong, amassing 19 wins with no defeats until facing David Starie. He is a former IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion – a title he lost on April 13, 2008 to Antonio Tarver. He has also previously fought for the WBC Light Heavyweight title but lost to Roy Jones Jr in 2002. In May 2006, Woods defeated Australia's Jason DeLisle in the 6th round. The fight was staged in Woods' home-town at the Ponds Forge complex in Sheffield.

[edit] Third meeting with Glen Johnson

Woods' most recent bout was on the 2nd of September 2006 where he met Glen Johnson for the third time. Although the previous two fights resulted in a draw and a victory for the Jamaican, Woods took the fight by a split decision and retained his IBF Light Heavyweight title.

In the ninth round Woods sustained heavy punishment to the head at the hands of the Jamaican, but the Sheffield boxer fought back to win the subsequent rounds. American Richard Bays scored the fight 115-112 in favour of Woods, Mickey Vann scored the contest 115-113 in favour of Johnson and Roberto Ramirez 116-112 scored in favour of Woods.

[edit] Recent news

Woods was scheduled to defend his IBF Light Heavyweight title against former opponent Julio César González on the undercard of the Ricky Hatton vs Jose Luis Castillo fight in Las Vegas, but was forced to withdraw through injury. The brutal rematch took place on September 29, 2007 where Woods was again declared winner by unanimous decision. Recently Woods has revealed that he was in negotitations with Joe Calzaghe the current undisputed World Super-Middleweight Champion for a domestic British super fight, which he believes that the British public would be more interested in than Calazghe going to the United States to fight Bernard Hopkins.

Woods was beaten by Antonio Tarver for the IBF and IBO Light Heavyweight titles. The fight took place on April 12, 2008 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida.

On 23 April Wood's trainer Dennis Hobson, claimed that he thinks his fighter was suffering from a virus, specifically a strain of meningitis, during his defeat by Antonio Tarver. A series of blood tests have been ordered.
