Bhajans by Kabir, Mirabai, Surdas, Tulsidas and a few others are considered to be classic. The language of their works is influenced by several of the dialects of Hindi. They are widely enjoyed even among those who do not speak Hindi.

Here is a representative selection of the best known bhajans by these poets.

Contents

[edit] Kabir: Chadaria Jhini Re Jhini

This bhajan has been recorded by several well known singers. Chadaria is chadar, a sheet of cloth. In this bhajan, the sheet stands for the human body, which is worn by a soul (atman) and is shed at the end of a life.

Translation:

This is fine, this is fine cloth.
It has been dipped in the Ram Nam (the name of the lord)
The spinning wheel, like an eight-petal lotus, spins,
with five tatvas and three gunas as the pattern.
Lord stitched it in 10 months (the gestation period)
The threads have been pressed to get a tight weave.
It has been worn by gods, people, and sages
they soiled it with use.
Kabir says, I have covered myself with this cloth with great care,
and eventually will leave it like it was.

[edit] Mirabai: Mane Chakar Rakho Ji

This famous hymn has another version which was used in the 1947 Hindi film Meerabai. Mirabai operated in Rajasthan and her dialect of Hindi is more properly called a variety of Rajasthani. Because of Rajasthan's proximity to Gujarat, Rajasthani and Gujarati share many similar linguistic features, and Mirabai seemed equally at home in either language. However here is the more popular version, influenced by Gujarati.

Translation:

Lord Girdhari (Krishna), make me your servant.
As your servant, I will plant a garden, and see you every day.
In the groves and lanes of Vrindavan, I will sing about you.

[edit] Tulsidas: Shri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhaju Man

A very lyrical Arati composition in highly Sanskritized Hindi.

इति वदति तुलसीदास शंकर शेष मुनि मनरंजनम्, मम हृदयकंज निवास कुरु कामादि-खलदल-मंजनम् ||५||

Translation:

O my mind! Revere the kind Shri Rama, who can remove the fear of rebirths.
who has lotus eyes, lotus face and lotus feet, red like the rising sun.

[edit] Surdas: Main Nahi Makhan Khayo

A very popular pad in Raga Ramkali. The naughty child Krishna was caught with freshly churned butter by his mother Yashoda, with some still on his face. He claims:

Translation:

I did not eat the butter, mother.
I think my friends have smeared some on my face!
