Cisman Mahmoud (Somali: Cismaan Maxamuud; var. Osman Mahamud) is a sub clan of the Majeerteen clan family, which is, itself, part of the larger subclan of Harti. They all fall under the umbrella of the larger Darod clan. The Cisman Mahmoud serve as the traditional leaders (Boqors) of the Majerteen.[1].
Its members inhabit the much of the Bari province. The commercial capital of Puntland ( Bosaso ) was founded by the Cisman Mahmoud.
The mountainous region of Karkaar, serving as their traditional homeland, has an overwhelming Cisman Mahmoud majority ( more than 75% of its inhabitants are Cisman Mahmoud Citizen and Civilized Peole. The Cisman Mahmoud are known for their savvy political skills and their leadership in constructing the Somali regional government of Puntland.[Neutrality disputed — See talk page] The current head of state of Puntland, Mohamud Muse Hersi, is Sub part of the Cisman Mahmoud clan family. The most notable Cisman Mahmouds are the Sultan of Hobyo, Ali Yusuf Kenadid, and his brother, Osman Yuusuf Keenadiid, who invented the Osmanya script and ruled over much of what today is Puntland all the way till Hobyo.
