Christian Alexander Maria, Graf Strachwitz von Gross-Zauche und Camminetz (Chris Strachwitz) is the founder and president of Arhoolie Records[1].
Strachwitz was born on July 1, 1931, in then Gross Reichenau, Lower Silesia, Germany, now Bogaczów, Gmina Męcinka, Jawor County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, to Alexander Maria Hubertus Hyacinthus, Graf Strachwitz von Gross-Zauche und Camminetz (Gross Reichenau, 29 November 1894 – Reno, Washoe County, Nevada, 11 July 1962) and wife (married at Berlin, 24 February 1927) Friederike Frances Adelheid von Bredow (Berlin, 2 November 1906 – 29 November 2003), daughter of Leopold Waldemar von Bredow (Bredow bei Nauen, 31 October 1875 – Lausanne, 1 October 1933 and wife (married at Washington, DC, 6 May 1905) Frances Newlands (San Francisco, California, 21 November 1880 – Berlin, 21 August 1907), daughter of Francis Griffith Newlands and wife Clara Adelaide Sharon.[2] He emigrated to the United States in 1947. He has made a career out of finding and publishing previously unrecorded or obscure blues and folk musicians.
