Christopher Jay Potter was born in Toronto and raised in London, Ontario. As a child, his mother involved him in community theatre, while his father, a former pro-football player, encouraged Potter's passion for baseball, football and ice hockey. Potter discovered a love of acting in school, but never seriously considered pursuing it as a career, working, instead, as a stockbroker in Europe and in Canada while continuing to perform in amateur theater productions. During this time, Potter caught the attention of Martha Henry, one of Canada's leading actresses, who cast him in the Canadian production of Biloxi Blues at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario. He won rave reviews and, within a month, landed a leading role in the CBC television series Material World (1990).
He made a name for himself in television starring in two long-running, popular dramatic series which, at one point, led to him appearing on screen in two different roles at the same time. He played David Carradine's son and crime fighting partner in Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, which debuted in 1993 and aired for four seasons, and starred as a hard-hitting police sergeant for three years in USA Network's Silk Stalkings, for which he also served as an episodic director. Some of his other credits include CBS's Open House, Rush of Fear, the ABC pilots The Big House (2001) and Astronauts (2002), Andromeda, the USA Network television movie The Waiting Game (1998), a continuing roll as the voice of Gambit in the Fox animated series X-Men (1992) and as a guest star on Will & Grace. In 1997, he recorded an album entitled Tourmaline (BMI) for MAG Records.
When Kung Fu:TLC ended, Potter accepted the lead in the revamped USA Network series Silk Stalkings. Subsequently, he shot a number of films, including The Shrink is In and Rockets Red Glare, for which he won the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival Award for best actor. In 2003, Potter accepted a co-starring role with Joely Fisher in a short-lived show on Lifetime. He played the role of Dan Lennox, a seasoned insurance investigator with a checkered past in Fisher's Canadian series Zoe Busiek: Wild Card (aka Wild Card). Other TV appearances include a role as Dr. David Cameron in the first season of the American/Canadian series Queer as Folk and an appearance in the US prime-time series Will & Grace. Potter also had two separate guest roles, playing two different characters, in the TV drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. More recently, he appeared as Captain Bill Fawcett in the Vin Diesel comedy, The Pacifier. In May 2007, he began appearing on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless as Evan Owen.
Potter currently lives in Erin, Ontario and in San Diego, California with his wife and their four children; Jessie, Quinn, Claire, and Gray.
