Coordinates: Chollerford is a village in Northumberland, England. It is situated approximately four miles (seven km) to the north of Hexham (via the A6079 road) on the B6318 road, not far from Hadrian's Wall. There is a roundabout in the village where the B6318 and B6320 roads meet, and a traffic light-controlled bridge across the North Tyne. Beside the river there is The George Hotel (owned by the Swallow Hotel group).
[edit] Early history
Hadrian's Wall, the most noted Roman monument in Britain, the course of which is situated near Chollerford, and the history of that wall as well as the Roman Stanegate form the earliest recorded history of the Chollerford vicinity. The extent of Hadrian's Wall was 117 kilometres, spanning the width of Britannia; the wall incorporated Agricola's Ditch[1] and was constructed primarily to prevent harrying by small bands of raiders and unwanted immigration from the north, not as a fighting line for a major invasion.[2]
