List of Father Ted episodes

"Chirpy Burpy Cheap Sheep" is the second episode of the third series of Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted.

[edit] Synopsis

Ted bets the heating allowance on the King of the Sheep competition. Unfortunately, Chris, his chosen sheep, has heard rumours about a sheep-eating beast and isn't feeling at all himself.

[edit] Miscellanea

  • The title is a parody of the 1970s song Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep by Middle of the Road.
  • There is a hidden pun in the show's plot — it's all about sheep worrying.
  • This is the only episode where the word "fuck" is used uncensored (as opposed to the Irish word "feck" which is regularly used as an alternative). During the scene where Ted makes his accusations, the phrase "fuckin' hell" can clearly be heard uncensored among the shocked mumbling of the crowd. The word was also used by Ted in "A Song for Europe", but was bleeped out.
  • Former Chelsea footballer Tore Andre Flo appears in a poster on the bedroom wall when Dougal is adding The Beast and the Phantom of the Opera to his list of things that don't exist.
  • Dougal's list of "things that don't exist" includes the Loch Ness Monster, Frankenstein, Magnum, P.I., Non-Catholic Gods, Darth Vader, The Phantom and, of course, The Beast.
  • In the script, Dougal was meant to say that "instead of a mouth, it's got two faces" while describing the Beast to Ted. Ardal O'Hanlon didn't think the line was funny, and so when the episode came to be recorded, he changed it on the spur of the moment to "instead of a mouth it's got four arses." The new version proved so effective that recording had to stop for a minute until the audience's laughter had subsided.
  • In the episode, Ted and Dougal are scared by the howling of 'terrible monster type A' on the BBC sound effects volume 5 and Dougal quickly dives into Ted's bed beside him. Yet, in the scene after, we see Fargo Boyle having just bought the BBC sound effects volume 5, which happens after Ted and Dougal hear the sounds of the album.
