[edit] High School basketball players

These guys are tough calls on notability. If those players you mentioned had passed WP:AFD, then you would have an argument, but since they have not, they could be deleted as well. Anyway, I agree with you on Flynn because I now see that he was on the 2006 USA Men's U18 National Team member, which is very notable. I will look into the other players and see if they have notability. --Thomas.macmillan 15:06, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Also, please leave messages either in the edit summary or on the talk page when you delete a prod. You did not do so for several de-prodded articles, including Jeremy McNeil, Louie McCroskey, and Matt Gorman. Just so you know, I am going to take these to AFD because, well, I don't see notability. Feel free to defend them.--Thomas.macmillan 15:17, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Just to let you know, you broke the rules of WP when you removed the speedy delete tag from a page you created rather than add 'hangon" as it says on the template. Please do not do this again, you are just causing me more work to get it deleted.--Thomas.macmillan 15:21, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
You are right, my mistake. But still, do not remove CSD templates without explaining why.--Thomas.macmillan 16:14, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Paul Harris (basketball)

Just to let you know that the repeat vandals on Paul Harris (basketball) have been blocked. See here for more. Keep up the good work! -- pb30<talk> 22:29, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jake Presutti

I looked at the Jake Presutti article because of your request on my talk page. My first thought is that this needs sources and editing to remove trivia and vanity material, but I suspect it's probably not worth going to the trouble of deleting. I am not an expert on college sports by any stretch of the imagination; my only goal is to keep the project moving forward by reducing the number of acrimonious deletion targets.

Our WP:BIO guidelines on notability are designed to ensure that entries are verifiably based on independent, reliable sources; those are the core issues, and the guidelines flow from them. I think they are generally met by Division I men's basketball players regardless of whether they are stars, widely recruited scholarship athletes, or walk-ons. There is no dearth of material about the team rosters. - Smerdis of Tlön 17:36, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Since he is on the team, I feel that he deserves an article on here. However, some of the parts of the article (i.e.: "he was an instant hit on the team..." is unnecessary. Also, we should look to find media guides or something similar to provide sources for the game stats (a box score would also work, I assume). Plus the trivia is unprovable and silly to me. "Some say he has a striking resemblance to him" doesn't belong in an encyclopedia. So, to sum it up, get rid of the silly stuff and find box scores and the like to back up the basketball related info.
The page as it now stands looks perfectly fine to me. He may not be the best known player in college basketball, but it is based on published, reliable information, which is what's really important. - Smerdis of Tlön 17:10, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

FWIW, I commented on the AfD you called to my attention. I also did a bit of ranting on my perception of the relative importance of college basketball vs. NBA basketball, at least as it stands in my area (Indiana, near Kentucky border). College basketball is the real game, pro ball is a grotesque parody. There's a whole lot more hoopla here over the tournament in which Indiana, Univ. of Kentucky, Univ. of Louisville, and sometimes even Purdue appear than there is over the Pacers. So I tend to think that the pro v. amateur division is upside down where basketball is involved. - Smerdis of Tlön 15:37, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for bringing the Presutti AfD to my attention. I usually try to comment on sports-related AfDs but didn't recognize that name as I'm not much of a college basketball fan. SliceNYC (Talk) 00:26, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

From AFD : I agree with Tier Two, the backups should be deleted, the top three players I clearly endorse deleting are Jake Presutti, Kristof Ongenaet who I'm not convinced about notability of him, as 6th best recruit in the class, Arinze Onuaku, and Rob Murphy (basketball) who looks like a graduated student assistant. Keep the obvious starters, with one thing. If they never reach the pros, we could always rediscuss them for deletion. I'm not closing it as I did the nomination, and deletions are still possible. [edit] Jake Presutti: response to query

The article Syracuse Orange men's basketball is not up for deletion, and if it were, I'd post in favor of keeping it. It is a perfectly notable college sports team, like the Fighting Irish football team or the Arizona Wildcats basketball team. The trouble with Jake Presutti himself is that he is, as you say, a "walk-on" for this college basketball team, and therefore can't really be said to be notable under the criteria for an athlete. Hope that helped, -- Thesocialistesq/M.lesocialiste 20:29, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

I apologize. I didn't read the struck-out section thoroughly, and I'm a bit out of myself right now. On review, I think it's disingenuous to list the Afd as "Jake Presutti" and simultaneously call for the deletion of articles other than Jake Presutti. I'd support the "Tier one" option, as Tier two seems untenable and the rest go too far with some of these very notable athletes. I'll change my vote accordingly. Sorry again, -- Thesocialistesq/M.lesocialiste 20:49, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm relisting the tier two opinion in AFD, and another one for the assistant coaches. Next time don't go to people talk pages and WP:CANVASS them. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 19:58, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

I have blocked the anonymous IP address that was editing Demetris Nichols for one week. Please note that, by Wikipedia:Blocking policy, long term bans on IP addresses are not favoured. The earlier spate of vandalism was from a different but nearby IP address. There are likely no better solutions apart from Eternal Vigilance. - Smerdis of Tlön 18:40, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
