Chelsea and Fulham station opened in 1863 and was situated between Fulham Road (Stamford Bridge) and King's Road (Stanley Bridge) on the West London Line (WLL). It closed during the Second World War after being bombed in 1940 along with other stations on the WLL and never reopened. No traces of the original building remain, but as of March 2008, the platform riser walls & some coping stones (platform nosings) remain evident, unchanged for decades.
There was speculation that the station could re-open, possibly with funding from Chelsea F.C. This now seems unlikely, given the two new stations planned for the WLL: Shepherd's Bush and Imperial Wharf had both originally been due to open in 2007. However, following the structural problems at Shepherd's Bush railway station which has seen the opening indefinitely suspended, and the failure to secure the finances to build Imperial Wharf railway station, the Chelsea station proposal may have carried more weight. Chelsea F.C. have been keen to expand Stamford Bridge and a new adjacent station would have helped this enormously.
Much residential development has taken place on the land adjacent to the footprint of the old station; as such, reinstatement of the platforms would lead to a substandard platform width compared with modern standards. Acceptance of this deviation to railway standards would be highly unlikely in this area due to the potential passenger numbers (and associated station overcrowding) on Chelsea match days. Therefore any potential reopening is highly unlikely at this time.
