The article alludes to the port serving railway stock or more than one gauge, but it doesn't say why.
ANSWER: Canadian boxcars used standard gauge trucks. However, the railway in Newfoundland was based on the narrow gauge of the old Reid Railway. This difference meant more employment for workers in the Port aux Basques yard who originally swapped trucks so that the boxcars from Canada could continue on their way across the Island toward St. John's. This was phased out as the entire system switched to a container system. Eventually, in 1988, the entire rail system in Newfoundland was terminated. Usable equipment was sold to countries in South America.
