Chartered IT Professional - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chartered IT Professional

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CITP denotes a Chartered IT Professional (in full, Chartered Information Technology Professional). This professional certification is awarded under Royal Charter to IT professionals who satisfy strict criteria set by the British Computer Society (BCS), which is the professional body for IT in the United Kingdom. In order to qualify for this award a person normally needs to have at least 10 years professional experience in IT. Relevance is assessed against the SFIA framework.

Certain formal qualifications (e.g., degrees) may be credited towards an application for the award, and the experience requirement reduced accordingly. For an applicant who holds an accredited honours degree in an IT subject, the experience requirement may be reduced to 5 years. For holders of non-IT degrees, or holders of IT qualifications at HNC or HND level, the portion of credit given is less, and holders of an ordinary degree in a non-IT subject must still have 9 years of relevant work experience.

When this award has been conferred by the Council of the British Computer Society, the recipient is entitled to use the letters CITP after their name. In order to maintain this award, demonstrable CPD must be undertaken.

Criteria and requirements for chartered status in the UK have to be approved by the Privy Council and as such the CITP designation is on par with other chartered qualifications in other fields (such as the Chartered Accountant qualification awarded by the ICAEW).
