"Charly" was the first single released by the British electronic act The Prodigy in August 1991.
The song featured a sample from the British children's public information film Charley Says. Writer Liam Howlett was sued for unauthorized use of the sample, but eventually won the case. This single was The Prodigy's first success as they reached number 3 in the British charts. The band was later criticized by the dance music magazine Mixmag for inspiring a glut of copycat rave songs which also sampled children's programming, including "Sesame's Treet" by Smart E's and "A Trip To Trumpton" by Urban Hype.
A music video directed by Russell Curtis featured live footage of one of the costume-wearing Prodigy's early performances, other visual effects and a mix of cartoon footage from the Charley Says public information film.
The single was released in different forms. Both XL Recordings and Elektra released the single, adding further numbers to versions with different content. Elektra issued the single in 1992.
