Chamberlayne Park Secondary School (CPS) is the main secondary school in Weston, Hampshire. It provides education for around 900 boys and girls aged between 11 and 16. The school is also a specialist Arts College. The demand for places at Chamberlayne Park School has been high and as a result, the school has grown in size. The school is one of the most improved between 2004 and 2008.[1] In addition the school received a very positive Ofsted inspection in January 2008.[2]

[edit] Weston Park Girls School
From the schools start in 1957 it was called Weston Park Girls School. Nearby there was a Weston Park Boys School (until it recently changed to Grove Park Business and Enterprise College and in September 2008 will become Oasis Academy Mayfield when it is merged with Woolston School Language College[3]). The name reflected the girls only nature of the school.
[edit] Chamberlayne Park Secondary School
It was decided that from 1993 the school would admit both genders. The last all girl year group left in 1998 and the school was renamed to Chamberlayne Park Secondary School after Mr Chamberlayne who donated the land for the school to be built on.
[edit] Chamberlayne College of the Arts
In September 2008 the school will be renamed to Chamberlayne College of the Arts to reflect its specialist status in the Performing Arts. A new uniform will also be enforced. In addition, the school house system will be removed.
[edit] Headteachers
Chamberlayne has seen three headteachers in recent years. After the Spring Term 2006 Richard Hillary retired after seven years in the role. For the next two terms Ian Knights, head of Hamble Community Sports College stood in as a temporary head. During this time he was head of two schools. In January 2007 Chris Kelly was appointed as headteacher.
[edit] New Buildings / Development
Southampton City Council and the school have spent in excess of £5 million on buildings and as a result now has specialist rooms for Science, Performing Arts, Technology (including Food, Textiles and Resistant Materials), Art, and ICT.
- In May 1999 Patrick Moore opened a set of four science labs, a library and an IT room. Since four more science labs have been added.
- In September 2000 Darcey Bussell opened the new Performing Arts block consisting of a music room, a dance studio, a drama studio and four music practise rooms.
- Emma Richards opened a new building for Maths and English. Each subject has seven rooms.
- During Summer 2007 a new Music Room was built (with new practice rooms) and the old music room was converted to a Dance/Drama multipurpose room.
- In 2007, an English room was converted into a 'media room' with 'cinema seating' for Media Studies use.
[edit] Use of ICT
Under the new headteacher (Chris Kelly) the school is embracing ICT all around the school. All students are registered electronically and any absence/lateness/truancy is reported automatically to parents via the phone and e-mail. The school has set up a learning portal allowing students are teachers to e-mail each other and submit homework.[4] The school art department has been sharing images of artwork with other schools on the Kids 101 Art website.[5] The school also has a radio station accessible through the internet. [edit] Performing arts
In September 2006 the school became a performing arts school. This means the school gets extra money to spend on Dance, Drama and Music. The school gained an Artsmark award in 2001[8]. In 2004 Ofsted said the school had 'a very strong provision for the performing arts'[9].
[edit] Physical education
The school PE department teach all the 'traditional' sports but also, more recently, have started clubs for more unusual sports, including Extreme Golf and Ultimate Frisbee[10].
[edit] Groups
Traditionally physical education has been taught in schools by dividing each year group into two groups. Within each of these big groups would be two boys' groups and two girls' groups. Starting in the 2006 school year the department experimented with groups based not on gender or ability but on different types of PE. For example one group is a team games group, another problem solving and another movement.

Chamberlayne Park School has a wide variety of sports facilities:

[edit] School productions
Since 2000 the school has produced a musical performed in July. The technology department build the sets and the art department paints the sets. The performers in the productions give up break and lunch times; time after school and some of their half term holiday to perfect the performances.
[edit] 2007: High School Musical
The school is one of the first in the UK to perform the stage version of the film High School Musical. Auditions were held in the week before the Easter holidays and parts were given on 19 April. Rehearsals started later that day. In the Summer Half-term participating pupils attended rehearsals in three days of their half term holidays. Performances were on four nights in the first week of July. Year 8 pupils were offered the chance to see the show at a discounted price during school time. Several of the main characters were played by different students. These performers shared their performances equally.
