Chafford Hundred is a recent UK housing development (building began in 1989) just outside Greater London between Grays and South Ockendon in the Borough of Thurrock. It is immediately adjacent to Lakeside Shopping Centre and West Thurrock. Chafford Hundred railway station serves the local area.
The Chafford Hundred area has seen large growth since its inception, with many City workers living there due to the relatively easy commute into the centre of London. In 2002 it was reported in the national press that Chafford Hundred was the most sought after place to live in England (based on property purchases and enquiries) due to the quality of property and local connections. Housing ranges from one or two bedroom apartments up to five / six bedroom large houses and therefore the area caters for many, although property prices have grown rapidly over the last five years.
The name is re-used from the historic Chafford hundred, which covered a much larger area including parts of present-day Thurrock in Essex and the London Borough of Havering in Greater London.
