My name is Adam R. Sweet. I studied music at the New England Conservatory at Rivers from 1968 to 1980. I performed in the Greater Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1979 touring Eastern Europe.
At Apple Hill Music Camp (NH) I studied chamber music, music theory and performance. I studied American folk and world music, Jazz, electronic music, psychology & therapy. In 1985 I received a B.A. in Ethnomusicology at Hampshire College.
My experience in teaching and performing are extensive. I teach fiddle and mandolin at the Northampton Community Music Center, the Keene Institute of Music & Related Arts and out of my studio in Belchertown, MA.
In a addition to playing Celtic music with Fiddle Hill, I play bluegrass mandolin and fiddle with Maple Ridge, fiddle and bouzouki with Woodkerne, and viola with the Keene Chamber Orchestra. I'm told I blend the heart and soul of traditional fiddling with the discipline of classical training.
My teaching specialties include Celtic, New England Contradance, Bluegrass, Klezmer, Jazz and Five (5) String fiddling. I also teach some French, Scottish, English, southern/Appalachian/old-time, Texas, and other types of tunes, mandolin and bouzouki. I teach mostly by helping people learn to read and write music, but am happy to teach by ear, by rote and via recordings as well. For beginners, the focus is on how to hold the instrument, make a good sound, play in tune, and learn to play a few tunes.
For more advanced players, the focus is on building a repertoire of tunes in a particular style or styles, bow patterns, ornamentation, chords and harmonies, and playing with a good danceable rhythm.
Group classes of 3 to 6 students are an efficient and fun way to learn and review tunes and learn to play with other people, while private lessons give us a chance to work on specific technical or musical goals or problems .
I assist my wife Emily with her shop Emily's Violin Co., travel to China and S. Korea to meet with suppliers, and generally handle anything computer-related for the business. Emily handles everything else.

Gold's Gym in Amherst on University Drive has asked me to start a concert series in their specialty/yoga studio upstairs. It will be Friday evenings from 7pm-11pm. There will be a minimal door fee, it will be free to members, and beverages and snacks will be provided. More on that later. Occupation I teach violin/fiddle, viola and mandolin. During the day I manage a Gold's Gym. (It's very hard making ends meet as a full time musicians. Most of my musician friends have full time day jobs). First and Third Sundays I run a Celtic Seisun with my friends John Rough and Andy Weiner at the Black Sheep Deli in Amherst from 5:30pm - 8pm. It is an open session and free to everyone. My one and only rule is that people RSVP prior to coming so I know how many chairs to set out.
