[edit] How many stations?

IF the Central Branch (of the LIRR, that is) is truly the branch running between Bethpage & Babylon, then ONLY ONE station was ever on that (LIRR) line - South Farmingdale. I do not see that Central Branch (*LIRR*) could refer to Central Rail Road of Long Island --JimWae (talk) 06:44, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

According to The Long Island Rail Road: A Comprehensive History, there were stations at Farmingdale and North Lindenhurst between the two junctions. I'm pretty sure "Central Branch" also applied to the line between Bethpage and Garden City when it existed. --NE2 08:46, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Those were CRRLI stations. As a LIRR branch of the Main Line, only So. Farmingdale was a station. Article could be clearer on this --JimWae (talk) 15:29, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
    • I'm not sure when North Lindenhurst disappeared, but [1] shows the Central Branch (labeled as such) stretching from Creedmoor to Babylon. --NE2 21:55, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
  • I can't read that map too well - and cannot see any branch labelling. The current Central Branch is from what appears on that map from Bethpage Junction to Babylon. Do you have a date for that map? I notice there are no stations at all along that stretch at that time, and that there is a stop called Bethpage Park. I do not know what the LIRR called the other line from Creedmore to Bethpage Junction after it took it over, or how long they continued service. I have read that one of the first parts on which service was discontinued was from Central Park (south of current Bethpage station) to Bethpage Junction. The Salisbury Plains stop is the current Westbury stop - on the MAIN LINE. --JimWae (talk) 07:54, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Maybe the Salisbury Plains station is meant to be on the old CRRLI line. Looks then, like the Hempstead circle got smudged out
  • The CRRLI likely did have a station named Salisbury Plains too.
  • The current Central Branch of the LIRR is the track from "Bethpage Junction" to Babylon. It uses track laid originally by the CRRLI. Wikipedia needs a CRRLI article --JimWae (talk) 07:57, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
  • The LIRR *might* have called that line the Central Line or Central Branch. If we can find it did, then note of that former usage would be a useful part of this article --JimWae (talk) 08:02, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
  • In case you are not aware, much of the CRRLI track has been torn up. Some was reinstalled to build Levittown, but was again later removed --JimWae (talk) 08:14, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

The map is from 1941; if you look at the lower left corner (and the main map near Garden City), the ex-CRR is labeled "CENT. BR." --NE2 23:36, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

  • I think I can make out "CENT. BR." on each map - however on the upper left map it seems associated with the CRRLI line, while on the largest map it seems associated with the current MAIN Line from Floral Park to Hicksville. The current meaning of "Central Branch" is neither of those contradictory labellings. I do not think we could use this map to decide what the LIRR called the lines in 1941, do you? Some remnants of the CRRLI line are now part of Hempstead Branch (LIRR) until that branch turns south. East of that the tracks are used for freight. Tracks east of Meadowbrook Pkwy have been removed --JimWae (talk) 05:17, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
    • The printing is a bit off, but both are referring to the ex-CRR. The Hempstead Branch used to continue north from Garden City to the Main Line. --NE2 16:23, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
  • It appears to me that CENT. BR. is attached to a different line on each of the 2 maps--JimWae (talk) 20:23, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
    • Somebody should add a chart for all the former stations, maybe one which includes the current ones along the Hempstead Branch. I'm glad I hid that list of former station here, but disappointed that I missed the mad dash to add them all to the article. ----DanTD (talk) 13:24, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey, NE2, where's the Pennsylvania Railroad Hempstead Branch (Ohio) in that link? I looked in the Cincinnati link there, and I couldn't tell which line was which. ----DanTD (talk) 02:44, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
