Cavtat (Italian: Ragusavecchia, Greek Epidaurus, Επιδαυρος) is a town in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County of Croatia. It is on the Adriatic seacoast 15km south of Dubrovnik and is the center of the Konavle municipality. The English language pronunciation is "Tsav-tat".
It was a Greek colony known as Epidaurus, which in 228 BC came under Roman rule becoming later Roman colonia. Following the invasion of Slavs, the inhabitants of the city established Ragusa in the better protected place nearby in 614. Slavic Cavtat belonged to Travunia. It was bought from duke R.Pavlović by the Republic of Ragusa in 1426 sharing its fate thenceforward.[clarify]

[edit] Holiday Accommodation
Cavtat has several hotels, perhaps the most highly regarded of which is the Hotel Croatia, situated amongst the pine woodlands that are synonymous with the Southern Adriatic. Numerous private accommodations - apartments and houses - can also be rented out in Cavtat as well as in the whole of the Konavle region.
[edit] Famous persons
Croatian tenor Tino Pattiera was born in Cavtat in 1890.
Prior to taking a repertory for which he became famous (although today he is, undeservedly, we might add, somewhat forgotten), he was notable in operetta.
Tino was a handsome man with an exceptional, dark heroic tenor voice, that was, some say, perfectly suited for roles like Manrico in Il Trovatore.
On occasion compared with Caruso, Tino acquired quite an audience in 1920s.
Right about that time he partnered Meta Seinmeyer and was greatly responsible for a resurgence of interest in Verdi's operas in Germany.
It is unknown why this world class tenor never performed in HNK (Croatian National Theater) in Zagreb.
Tino passed in 1966 and is buried in his hometown - Cavtat.
